Mission Statement
Mazzoni Center provides quality comprehensive health and wellness services and it the only health care provider in the Philadelphia region specifically targeting the unique health care needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) communities.
About This Cause
Mazzoni Center was founded as Lavender Health in 1979 as an all-volunteer resource to meet the needs of members of the LGBTQ community. We were born in a pandemic. We rose to meet the challenge posed by the AIDS crisis in the early 1980s and for more than forty years we have continually risen to meet the challenges the LGBTQ community has faced in obtaining competent and respectful care. Incorporated as Philadelphia Community Health Alternatives (PCHA) in 1981, we were the first agency in Philadelphia to respond to the AIDS crisis. Today, we continue to serve the LGBTQ community through expanded services which include HIV prevention and care, primary medical care, medical case management, mental health counseling and treatment of substance use disorder , legal services, youth support in schools, LGBTQ competency training, a food bank, and the annual Philadelphia Trans Wellness Conference. We believe that all people deserve access to high-quality, affirming health care in an environment where they feel respected and their needs are understood. Our Heritage & History The LGBTQ healthcare landscape has changed since we opened our doors in 1979, but our commitment to providing compassionate, competent LGBTQ-focused health and wellness services has remained the same. We are proud of our history of responding to the HIV epidemic and providing care to the most vulnerable and under-served members of the LGBTQ community. We stand on the shoulders of a handful of devoted volunteers who started our organization as Lavender Health. We intend to continue the work they started. Today. And tomorrow.
