Mission Statement
Ronald McDonald House of Scranton (RMHS), a non-profit, 501 (C) (3), eases the hardship of children’s illness on families through programs that directly improve the health and wellbeing of children. Through our two core programs: Ronald McDonald House and four Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, RMHS keeps families with sick children together and close to the medical care their child needs at leading local hospitals. RMHS programs not only provide access to quality health care, they enable family-centered care, ensuring families are fully supported and actively involved in their children’s care.
About This Cause
Faced with a child’s illness life stops overnight and parents enter a world of fear and worry. For parents who don’t live close to the medical care their child needs, there’s an added stress - Distance. Most families have to travel hours for treatment. Living expenses quickly add up. Long drives, lost jobs, worried siblings, sleeping in cars. Being far from family and friends. These are extra burdens no family should have to experience. Help even more families stay close through the biggest challenge of their lives. Together, we can do big things. While RMHS cannot make medicine taste better or take away painful treatments, we can help lessen the burden and ensure thousands of families a year have the stability and resources they need to keep their child healthy and happy. We believe that an oasis of comfort in a sea of chaos is as powerful as any medication. We believe that a home is more than four walls and a roof over your head. It is the intangible magic that transpires in moments shared together. We believe in building a global community that finds strength, hope and courage in embracing healing as a joyous experience. The Ronald McDonald House of Scranton has provided a free of charge “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children for over thirty years. Our house offers every single family with a child or infant receiving care in area hospitals a private stay complete with laundry, transportation, home-cooked meals, and plenty of space to rest, relax, and recapture the normalcy and strength of home. In order to better serve our local community and families, over the past decade, we’ve opened and operated Ronald McDonald Family Rooms in four regional hospitals. These family rooms offer a haven inside the hospital walls just footsteps from the child’s bedside. Complete with a living room, fully stocked kitchenette, and decorated/ furnished like a home, these rooms are spaces for parents and siblings to rest, grab a cup of coffee or lunch, and escape the beeping clinical environment. Last year, our family room program saw over 16,000 visits, our volunteers/staff made over 7,000 hospitality cart visits, and our house program saw over 2,000 visits. We believe this increase is due to the person to person communication made possible by our family rooms. We believe it is this increased impact and personal touch that has caused families to rate our programs 9.8 out of 10. This number speaks to what we are most proud of – our ability to be there for families during tough medical emergencies.
