Mission Statement
The Food Trust's mission is to ensure that everyone has access to affordable, nutritious food and information to make healthy decisions. Working with neighborhoods, schools, grocers, farmers and policymakers, we've developed a comprehensive approach to improved food access that combines nutrition education and greater availability of affordable, healthy food.
About This Cause
The Food Trust (TFT) was established in 1992 to develop a stable food supply in underserved communities, educate youth and families about healthy eating, and improve the connection between urban and agricultural communities. Recognizing low-income communities are challenged most by food insecurity, TFT gears its programs primarily to underserved, inner-city residents, with a focus on families with children. Food Trust programs serve more than 400,000 people annually in low-income areas of Philadelphia and surrounding underserved communities, including Norristown, Reading, and Camden, NJ, as well as San Jose, CA. In a survey conducted by Philanthropedia, TFT was recognized as one of the top “high-impact” nonprofits in the field of health and childhood nutrition. TFT’s comprehensive approach combines nutrition education with increased availability of affordable, healthy food. TFT operates a network of 12 Philadelphia farmers markets—the majority of which are located in low-income, high-need areas—that accept and promote the use of food assistance programs like SNAP. Another program, the Healthy Corner Store Initiative (HCSI), works with corner store owners in PA, NJ and CA to increase the capacity of small urban stores to stock and promote healthy products, including fresh local produce. The Hearts Smarts Program, which evolved out of HSCI, seeks to make corner stores hubs for community health by providing in-store nutrition education and health screenings. Other TFT programs include the Food Bucks and Food Bucks Rx nutrition incentive programs; youth and adult nutrition education in schools and community sites; and farm to school/preschool programs, which work to build the connection between schools and local agriculture. TFT also collaborates with local and national partners to encourage the development of supermarkets and other healthy food outlets in high-need areas, and engages in advocacy at the city, state, and federal levels.
