Mission Statement
Breakthrough increases educational opportunity by focusing on the development of both students and teachers. Through academic enrichment and college preparation, Breakthrough prepares students who have limited educational opportunities to attend and succeed at competitive high schools and four‐year colleges. Simultaneously, Breakthrough develops future educators by providing professional teaching experiences to college students through its selective residency programs.
About This Cause
Mission Statement Founded in 1995, Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia is a three-year academic enrichment program that builds a path from middle school to college for low-income students from Philadelphia’s public schools. Breakthrough also inspires talented high school and college students to become educators and engaged citizens by giving them responsibility for teaching in its programs. Brief History For nearly 20 years, Breakthrough has harnessed the energy and talent of motivated young people working towards earning a college degree. In that time, we have supported more than 500 Teaching Fellows and provided a path for over 1,000 public school students to become the first in their family to claim that right. Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia was started in 1995 as ‘Summerbridge Germantown’, a two-year program that prepared 30 Germantown area students for enrollment in competitive college-preparatory high schools. Today, Breakthrough is a six-year middle-school to college program serving students at two sites, Drexel University and Germantown Friends School, both of which serve as collaborative partners. Today, Breakthrough provides academic enrichment and college preparatory support to over 300 students in grades 7-12, and trains more than 60 college students for teaching careers.
