Mission Statement
As a cancer and wellness resource center, we work hard to provide services to our cancer clients and their loved ones in a welcoming, supportive, and relaxing environment. Services are free during the time of treatment and for one year thereafter. Anyone, 18 years of age and older with any cancer diagnosis is welcome.
About This Cause
Candy's Place, a Cancer & Wellness Center, is a place where our cancer clients and their families can find solace through a supportive, comforting and welcoming environment. Since its foundation in 1998, thousands have benefited from the services provided at Candy's Place. These services--which range from physical to emotional support--complement the medical treatment they receive in the medical community and offer additional and different support as we walk with them through their journey. Candy's Place was founded by Penny Cunningham in the hopes of keeping the memory of her sister, Candice Vincent-Mamary, alive. Candice, more commonly known as Candy, had a vision of a place where people with cancer could find emotional and social support. After Candy lost her battle with lung cancer in 1998, Penny was determined to make her sister's dream a reality. With the help of family and friends, as well as the proceeds from the first Rainbow Walk, Candy’s Place was founded. Candy’s Place has carefully chosen to address the physical, emotional, and social needs for those diagnosed with cancer to enhance their medical treatment. Although advances have been made towards the treatment of cancer, little emphasis has been placed on the recovery of cancer's physical and emotional aspects, and most importantly, the quality of life issues before, during, and after cancer treatment. Candy's Place is a loving and non-threatening atmosphere where clients living with cancer feel free to visit and not only find the answers they seek, but make life-long friendships with the staff and volunteers as well as with fellow cancer clients. The staff and volunteers at Candy's Place strive to add dignity and quality of life to those living with cancer. Candy's Place is open to everyone in the community age 18 or older who is living with a cancer diagnosis. Everyone is welcomed with open arms, and we do not discriminate by race, sex, age, or type of cancer. Through community support, fundraisers and grants, Candy's Place has evolved into an organization that offers free programs and services to our cancer clients and their caregivers. These programs and services include support groups, educational workshops, cancer resources, individual and family consultations, a lending library, a wig and accessories boutique and haberdashery, massage, reiki, reflexology, facials, and vibrational sound and art therapies. Candy's Place also offers one-on-one training sessions, yoga, meditation, and cardio classes. Many of the services provided at Candy's Place are also open to the public for a fee. As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, Candy's Place relies completely on donations and support from individuals and organizations to operate on a daily basis, providing the services and support to cancer patients and their loved ones through a home-like environment. Candy's Place collaborates with the medical community, Northeast Regional Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, and other resource groups to promote health and healing.
