About This Cause
Big Brothers Big Sisters of America was organized in 1904, and is now recognized as the largest mentoring program in the world—serving more than 200,000 children in the United States. With constant growth in stature, it has been recognized as one of America’s Greatest Brands. Research released in the 1990’s documenting the effectiveness of the BBBS model in America resulted in heightened demand for BBBS mentoring outside the United States. As a result, In 1998, Big Brothers Big Sisters International was established and is now serving more than 30,000 children and youth around the world. BBBSA and BBBSI are separate legal entities but are joined first by a passion to improve the lives of children and the excellence of the BBBS model of mentoring, and secondly, by a cooperative agreement which empowers BBBSI to expand BBBS services to countries outside the United States. The global vision of BBBSI is children around the world realize their potential, creating a better future for themselves, their countries, and the global community. Its mission is to help children around the world reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships with measurable impact. Children and youth on different continents face many different challenges, but the positive impact of a BBBS mentoring relationship has been demonstrated across cultures. Commitment to excellence in service delivery—a hallmark of the BBBS brand—is shared by the international Affiliates whose professionals are passionate advocates for children and youth in their respective countries. Global partners in youth service, government, and business, as well as dedicated individuals, are supporting the goal of BBBS International to make it possible for even more children around the world to have a friend, advocate, and role model in their lives.
