Mission Statement

HOSTS for HOSPITALS (HfH) is a nonprofit agency providing free or low-cost lodging and support at volunteer host-homes as a caring response to the housing needs of patients and their families who come to Greater Philadelphia for specialized medical care.  From July 2000 through June 2016 host-families  have provided over 2,900 patient-families a combined total of over 111,00 nights of lodging, saving these families $7.4 million in equivalent hotel expenses.

About This Cause

WHO CAN STAY? HOSTS for HOSPITALS host-home lodging is available for all patient-families without restriction to age, race, religion, family size, type of illness, length of stay, geographic origins or medical institution provided the guests: * have a permanent home to which to return * can take care of themselves at the host-home * are coming from out-of-town in association with someone receiving medical care in the Greater Philadelphia area * are unlikely to put the hosts at any risk in any manner. A patient-family may include any individual who comes to town in support of the patient. Patients may be guests if they are independent, whether by themselves or the help of a support person. BENEFITS OF HOST-HOME LODGING TO OUT-OF-TOWN PATIENT-FAMILIES. Having family members present is of direct benefit to patients and family members. Patients need the support of family members to navigate complex health care systems and decisions. Family members need a place to go to restore their energy and thus be able to help their hospitalized loved one each day. For both patients and family members, staying at a host-home provides a place where guests witness that life goes on normally, providing a break from the medical crises. Indeed, for hospitalized patients there is peace-of-mind in knowing that their loved ones are at a home with a caring host-family, rather than being alone at a hotel. WHO ARE OUR HOSTS? Our hosts are typical people from all walks of life. At the same time they are extraordinary in that they are unpaid volunteers who welcome sharing their home with patient-families in need! Before being accepted into the program, HOSTS for HOSPITALS screens each host and conducts an on-site inspection of the host’s home. Hosts are trained to be sensitive to guests’ feelings of stress and concern for their loved ones. Hosts know to respect the privacy of their guests and thus do not expect to socialize with their guests unless hosts and guests mutually wish to do so. Hosts find helping patient-families in this manner to be an incredibly rewarding experience. Time after time hosts express “We get as much from hosting as do our guests!” As one host said, "When I'm hosting I get to be the type of person I want to be!" HOW CAN YOU HELP? Do you make gifts each year to your favorite charities? Arrange for an annual gift to be made to HOSTS for HOSPITALS. Does your workplace have a giving program? Is there a community involvement program at your company? These are the ways in which people learn about the opportunity to host patient-families. Currently our program lodges 15-20 patient-families each night. We could be helping many more patient-families if only we had a more host-families. If you help recruit just one host, and that host lodges three patient-families a year for five years, you will helped 15 patient-families!!
