Mission Statement
Variety builds independence and self-confidence in children and youth with disabilities by engaging them in recreational, social and educational enrichment activities, while connecting families to resources.
About This Cause
Since 1935, Variety – The Children’s Charity of Greater Philadelphia has been serving children with physical and developmental disabilities. Tent 13 (the Philadelphia chapter) is part of an international charity that helps children with special needs around the world. The current menu of programs offered by Variety includes: Camp and Developmental Center: This 80-acre facility provides day camp, residential camp, and weekend retreats to Variety’s children. The camp enables children to live life with choice, allows them to interact with their peers, and encourages all children to reach beyond their disabilities. The camp also provides a much-needed respite for parents, who can rest assured knowing their children are in a fun and safe environment. After School Programs: This program provides a safe haven for children to go when the school day has ended. It offers educational and recreational opportunities for children while providing parents with a few extra hours to work, run errands, or prepare dinner. After School programs, offered in various schools throughout the region, provide homework assistance as well as other opportunities for enrichment and recreation. Direct Care for Kids: This last resort program provides families with much needed medical equipment and aids for living such as wheelchairs, walkers, and braces. Variety at Play: This committee of caring individuals volunteers their time and talent to organize special events for Variety’s children. Events include: parties, outings to Sesame Place, the Philadelphia Zoo, sporting events, and recreational opportunities.
