Mission Statement
Magnificat Houses, Inc. (MHI) is a welcoming community where those needing housing, food and mental health programs can grow in stability, productivity and independence. We offer dignified homes and work-based training to those who can recover from the street. For chronic street populations, we provide meals and hope. All are welcome, regardless of race, creed, or personal history.
About This Cause
MHI operates three primary programs aimed at Houston’s homeless, hungry and mentally ill populations: housing for homeless adults, a soup kitchen for those seeking hot lunches, and a day program for adults with mental health diagnoses. Guests in MHI’s housing program receive clean and safe beds, linens, toiletries, dignified clothing and three hot, home-cooked meals per day in our 16 residential houses. Adult men and women may enter our 3-night emergency stay program, and progress to a renewable 90-day transitional stay, during which guests enter a period of stabilization and may receive assistance with such things as obtaining an identification card, receiving job training or getting their GED. Some guests stay for a longer period in our permanent supportive housing program because they function best in community-based housing programs. Loaves and Fishes soup kitchen offers a free, hot, and nutritious lunch to anyone who would like one. Lunches are served every week, Tuesday through Sunday. Due to COVID-19 spatial distancing guidelines, lunches are now served to-go, but guests are still welcome to come back for seconds, no questions asked. MHI currently serves approximately 375 meals each day, which is up from approximately 275 daily lunched at the beginning of 2020. MHI’s St. Joseph Clubhouse provides uplifting and empowering day programs for adults with mental health diagnoses. Membership is free, and not limited to MHI residential guests. Clubhouse members take part in therapeutic psycho-social programs designed to build confidence and self-esteem. Our ultimate goal is to help the homeless move to a life of safety, stability, and independence. MHI was founded to offer refuge and hope to the destitute by creating homes where people of different mental abilities, social backgrounds, religions, and cultures can live together in community. We are dedicated to the conviction that recovery is possible in a community offering hope, respect, opportunities, work, a good home, and friendship. MHI provides a bridge back to the outside and gives our guests the courage to cross it.
