Mission Statement
The Springfield Humane Society is dedicated to improving the quality of life for animals by providing protection, compassionate care and adoption services for homeless animals. Through public education we advocate for a humane community by promoting responsible pet ownership and prevention of cruelty to animals.
About This Cause
Springfield Humane Society is a small animal shelter with a big heart, doing big things. We offer comfort and care for homeless and stray pets and also take in animals when their families can no longer keep them. We even act as the town "pound" for several surrounding towns. We adopt out over 500 animals per year including dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, turtles, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and rats! We not only help animals, we also serve the people in our communities by hosting low cost spay/neuter clinics, low cost microchips, we respond to cruelty and neglect calls with the police, and we offer volunteer opportunities. We even help people keep their beloved pets through difficult times through our No Place Like Home program which offers free food, free training, and veterinary care loans with zero interest. We take pride in the care we give our animals. Our cats have community cat rooms where they can hide if they want, play with other kitties or a myriad of toys, climb towers, walk around the catwalk near the ceiling, and even enjoy the occasional catnip treat! We have a separate building with two isolation units for sick kitties to keep them as far away as possible from the healthy cats. Our dogs are kept in state of the art kennels where we have aromatherapy, music therapy, and brain games. We have two puppy rooms where moms and their litters can be, or dogs who don't do well in a kennel environment. We have three fenced in off-leash play yards and a great walking path through a large field. We have a Rent-a-Rover program where dogs can go out with a member of the public for an hour, or a weekend, and get to have some great one to one time outside of the shelter including sleepovers, ice cream, swimming, and FUN! We have volunteer dog walkers and make sure that each of our dogs gets at least one long walk a day, usually more, and we have doggy play dates with our kennel dogs as well! All of the animals who come to us have proper diets for their age and species, including prescription diets when necessary. Our bunnies have fresh hay, veggies, fruit and of course bunny food. Our rats have rat food, veggies, fruit, and proper wood to chew on for their teeth. Our turtles are kept in a very large aquarium with places to float or swim. All of our pets are spayed or neutered prior to adoption as well as being fully vaccinated, wormed and microchipped. We even have a special fund run by donations for animals with needs above and beyond the basics including heartworm treatment, blood transfusions, intensive care and oxygen therapy, laser treatments, and surgeries of all types. We even had surgery done for a guinea pig who came to us with an open tumor! If it can be fixed, we'll fix it! And finally we are very proud of our 95% Live Release Rate - 95% of the animals who enter our shelter end up leaving! No shelter can be 100% live release as there are times when an animal is suffering with no cure, or is extremely dangerous to itself or the community. And before we make those hard decisions, we have the animal thoroughly checked by at least one vet, sometimes two, sometimes a specialist, and for behavior we have a certified trainer on staff, and a certified animal behaviorist who volunteers for difficult cases for us. We have used treatment plans, behavior modification, even medications like prozac for the dangerous or disturbed animals. Our staff is top notch! Our Executive Director has 25 years working with animals, our shelter manager has 15 years, one of our animal care techs has an associates degree in animal science with experience training and grooming, plus a dozen years working with shelter animals, and our other animal care tech has 5 years working with us, and has taken numerous professional level classes in that time covering anything you can think of related to shelter work! And we all continue to learn, taking every opportunity we can for classes, literature, even talking in detail with other shelters. We are proud of the good work we do, and we know it could never happen without the generosity of our friends. Thank you for considering donating to us!
