Mission Statement
Young Horizons provides early care and education to over 400 children from low-income families in Long Beach daily.
About This Cause
1. Early Childhood Education - Young Horizons provides state-licensed full-day childcare and half-day preschool for low-income children, every weekday from 7am to 6pm except major holidays. Young Horizons ensures that low-income children experience the early learning that prepares them for kindergarten so that they can keep up and compete with their more affluent peers. 2. Teach Parenting Skills and Child Development - To help ensure that children have a safe and nurturing home environment, Young Horizons provides ongoing and comprehensive workshops for parents and guardians, teaching them the stages of child development and parenting techniques that address a variety of childhood behaviors. Young Horizons’ parenting workshops, and also our teachers’ commitment to creating and maintaining positive, supportive relationships with parents, help to forward the healthy development and safety of the hundreds of children enrolled with us every year. 3. Provide Critical Nutrition and Combating Food Insecurity - Young Horizons is also an important source of nutrition for low-income children. During their day at Young Horizons, children eat nutritious, low-fat, low-sugar meals and snacks, which are made from whole ingredients and adhere to state nutrition guidelines. Children enrolled with Young Horizons receive critically needed nutrition for children whose families’ financial situations may cause food insecurity and hunger in the home. We provide approximately 130,000 balanced meals and 38,000 healthy snacks per year. 4. Promote Literacy in the Home - Each of Young Horizons’ 5 sites is stocked with book bags, which can be checked out by families for reading at home. While libraries are critical community resources, the reality of many Young Horizons families is that they rely on public transportation for all of their transportation needs and that libraries are one more time-consuming destination with limited opening hours. 124 families took advantage of this service in the last year. 5. Help Parents Maintain Employment or Schooling – And finally, Young Horizons’ ECE Program is offered for an affordable sliding scale fee, making it possible for parents who cannot afford full-price childcare to provide safe and appropriate care for their children. This enables parents to gain and retain employment or complete a higher education or vocational training program that will better enable them to create stability and security for their entire family. 6. Ensure Exceptional Program Quality - Young Horizons also provides ongoing teacher training to ensure that our staff have the knowledge and tools they need to help children develop social and academic skills, provide a safe environment, establish positive relationships with parents, and help families to locate any additional community resources they may need to create a safe home for their children.
