About This Cause

Martin Center was founded in 1969 by the late Rev. Boniface Hardin, O.S.B., and Dr. Raymond Pierce and dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and St. Martin de Porres. Martin Center was founded for the purpose of combating oppression, particularly racism. It was concerned with the reconciliation of all peoples representing all cultures. The Center originally conducted seminars and training on Affirmative Action and the techniques of teaching Afro-American heritage. In 1970, the Martin Center founded the Indianapolis Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation in an attempt to address the problem of Sickle Cell Anemia in the Black community. The Center desired to address the health and social wellness of Sickle Cell patients and their families. Since then, combating Sickle Cell has been the Center’s main focus. In 2012, Martin Center assumed the name Martin Center Sickle Cell Initiative in order to have its name more directly reflect its mission.
