Mission Statement

MISSION STATEMENT Hale Kipa provides opportunities and environments that strengthen and encourage youth, their families and communities to actualize their potential and social responsibility. Hale Kipa, or “House of Friendliness,” is a multi-service, fully accredited 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that specializes in working with youth and their families who often have nowhere else to turn. Hale Kipa has served more than 67,000 youth throughout Hawai‘i since its beginning in 1970 as a single shelter on O‘ahu. This includes working in partnership with public agencies and private organizations to provide residential, outreach, and foster care services at no cost. With programs that are flexible and responsive to changing needs, Hale Kipa supports youth involved in juvenile justice, behavioral health, education and child welfare. Program goals include stabilizing young people in crisis and helping youth and families build resiliency to experience success in their lives. Services are flexible, free, creative, and determined by the youth’s and family’s needs. All persons are treated equitably and without favoritism, subject to limitations imposed by contractual obligations.

About This Cause

KEY SERVICES PROVIDED Hale Kipa’s programs bring together extensive experience, the support of the government and community and the efforts of our dedicated staff to form a continuum of services, from prevention to residential. By design and in practice, Hale Kipa’s programs are intended to be proactive in helping youth overcome challenges at the earliest point of intervention so that they can embark on journeys towards bright and promising futures. Hale Kipa provides housing when there is nowhere to go, as well as counseling and support services, PPE, school supplies and equipment for those with specialized needs. SHELTER SERVICES The Emergency Shelter Program (ESP) is the foundation of Hale Kipa because it provides youth a safe and nurturing environment through its group and foster homes. The ESP provides basic emergency services, as well as crisis stabilization, assessment, support and counseling for youth between the ages of ten through seventeen, while focusing on reunification or preparing youth for alternative placements. The ESP is comprised of the following programs: Group Homes—Male and female group homes in Ewa, both ranging from ages 12 through 17. Both facilities serve youth needing group environment and structure. Kamala Homes—Short-term foster home placement for youth ages 10 through 17 years old whose needs are better met in a family setting. OUTREACH / PREVENTION SERVICES This continuum of services assists youth who are just starting to demonstrate behaviors that indicate they are at-risk for more severe problems and those who are involved in the child welfare or criminal justice systems. Their focus is to divert youth from additional juvenile justice or child welfare involvement, support those who have been incarcerated or in foster care and out-of-home placements and work with youth who are homeless and live on the streets. Various programs work with youth in the community to help prevent runaways and truancy, to improve school performance, secure safe housing and to strengthen family relationships. In addition, many of these programs work with youth in efforts to successfully transition back into the community or into adulthood. There is much emphasis on skill building, advocacy, crisis intervention, mentoring, linkages to community resources and educational and vocational support. RESIDENTIAL / FOSTER CARE PROGRAMS Youth and young adults at-risk often need safe and secure transitional housing. For youth under 18 years old, therapeutic foster homes provide youth with basic care and structure as it teaches living skills and healthy relationships. For young adults, Hale Kipa has numerous programs for men, women and pregnant and parenting women seeking to transition off the street, out of homelessness and/or into adulthood from foster care. Hale Kipa’s commitment is to honor their strengths, illuminate their challenges, and support them in realizing their goals while providing appropriate structure and support. EDUCATIONAL SERVICES Educational Services work towards helping youth link to appropriate educational programming, participate in experiential learning activities, explore careers, and obtain support to sustain current schooling or return to school, if suspended. These youth also receive instruction in specific topics such as prevention of sexual exploitation and pregnancy. WHY GIVE? Your gift to Hale Kipa is an investment in our young people and our community. When one life is changed for the better, the lives of many are touched. You can truly make a difference with you contribution, impacting thousands of people ... one life at a time.
