Mission Statement

The Illinois Spina Bifida Association (ISBA) works to improve the quality of life of individuals and families affected by spina bifida, a lifelong neurological condition that affects the spine and is usually apparent at birth.

About This Cause

Spina bifida is the failure of the spine to close properly during the first month of pregnancy. It takes a team of parents, doctors, therapists, teachers, and others to help a person with spina bifida achieve their maximum potential. The Illinois Spina Bifida Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1969 by a group of dedicated parents. ISBA works to accomplish its mission with a three-part program strategy: *Promote skills development and independence *Support individuals and families through outreach, education and advocacy *Invest in people by helping pay for medical care and supplies, post-high school tuition, emergency needs, and research
