Mission Statement
The W-JCC Community Action Agency is a 501(c)(3) community-based nonprofit founded in 1968 to act as a trusted resource of integrated services and community partnerships to promote self-sufficiency for individuals and families. We are one of over one thousand Community Action Agencies nationwide, which empower families that are experiencing economic hardship. Of the funds we receive, 90% are spent on programs and the clients we serve; only 10% are spent on administration. We nurture children through Head Start and Project Discovery for first-in-family college-bound students. We provide integrated support for the whole family approach, including one-time emergency rent or utility bill assistance tied to budgeting classes, free income tax preparation, emergency food distribution, and Smart Money Management classes. We help plant the seeds for a thriving Williamsburg-James City County community.
About This Cause
Our supportive programs and services empower youth, promote economic stability, and reduce the need for public support in the Williamsburg-James City County area. Head Start is a comprehensive preschool program offered to low-income families with children between the ages of 3 and 5 years old. This program promotes school readiness as well as health and family well-being. The agency serves 107 children from Williamsburg-James City County in three locations: Popular Creek, the Community Services Center (2 classrooms), Norge Elementary (2 classrooms), and James River Elementary (2 classrooms). Three full-time dedicated Family Service Workers work with the Head Start families through a Family Partnership Agreement, which focuses on the families’ immediate needs and goals. The family service staff seek out resources for families, which can include employment information, housing information, resources for food, health-related resources, etc. The Agency serves the community by assisting when needed and partnering with other non-profit organizations and/or businesses to offer services to our residents.
