Mission Statement

The Redwoods, A Community of Seniors is a continuing care community located on 10 acres in beautiful Mill Valley, California. The mission of The Redwoods is to maintain a creative, affordable community that promotes good health, well-being and security for a diverse group of seniors.

About This Cause

In 1972 The Redwoods, a 10-acre, non-profit, continuing care retirement community located in Mill Valley, was opened to meet the need in Marin County for affordable, quality residential care for seniors, particularly those with low and moderate incomes. Our mission is to promote good health, well-being and security to a diverse group of seniors. We work to transform attitudes and practices so that aging is recognized as a dynamic phase of renewal, discovery, service and choice. This approach, along with our excellent programs, services and staff, has led The Redwoods to be named a “model facility” by LeadingAge, the nation’s top education, research and advocacy organization for aging services. The Redwoods has won the Marin IJ Reader’s Choice Awards every year since its inception for Best Retirement Community, and Pacific Sun’s “Best of Marin” since its inception for Best Senior Living Facility. The Redwoods provides affordable rental housing, services and care to more than 340 seniors. We offer three living styles: Independent Living, Residential (Assisted) Living with Services, and the Health Care Center, a state-licensed Skilled Nursing Facility. Designed to meet the varying individual health and lifestyle needs of our residents, this enables seniors to continue living here even if their capacity for independence diminishes. The Redwoods provides a full spectrum of programs to enhance our residents’ health and well-being, including fitness classes, spirituality discussion groups, organic gardening, chair yoga, political lectures, music groups, and local sight-seeing and cultural excursions. Our new Center for Dynamic Aging houses a state of the art gym equipped with fitness machines that are tailored for seniors with limitations as well as a pool for aquatic therapy. The Redwoods is home to the Grove Center for palliative, comfort and hospice care and is Marin County’s first and only inpatient hospice center. The Grove Center provides services for seniors from throughout the Bay Area including those who qualify for HUD Section 8 low-income housing and Medi-Cal assistance. Our work is supported by 120 full-time and 60 part-time staff members, over 350 volunteers, and a 15-member Board of Directors. The age range for our residents is 72 to 106, and the average age is 87. The Redwoods has a long-standing commitment to affordability. Forty percent of our 149 Independent Living Apartments have HUD Section 8 low-income subsidies and an average of 30% of Health Care Center residents are on Medi-Cal. The Redwoods provides additional support through our SHARE Program, which enables low and moderate income residents facing unexpected financial challenges to remain living in our community, and helps them with rental assistance and unexpected costs such as eye glasses, dentures and hearing aids. At The Redwoods, we never want a resident to be forced to choose between buying groceries and purchasing a new pair of eyeglasses. Over the years, over $1 million in assistance has been distributed to residents with financial needs.
