Mission Statement

Taking a holistic approach to youth development, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Derry's Youth Guidance and Development program uses a combination of professional staff, trained volunteers and peer leaders to provide a wide range of activities and personal growth opportunities. The Club serves boys & girls ages 6-18 during the hours when children are at greatest risk, after-school and during school vacations. The program promotes and enhances the development of children by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. A wide range of learning experiences are incorporated into every member’s daily visit.

About This Cause

For more than a century, Boys & Girls Clubs have delivered quality, life-changing services to the youth they serve. We know that it is the overall Club Experience that connects youth to the Club and assures that members participate frequently and stay engaged. Our Club has adopted Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Formula for Impact, a research-based theory of change that describes how individual Clubs and the Movement as a whole can increase our impact – exponentially – on the young people of America. Each element of the Formula for Impact is informed by research into the ways in which young people grow and thrive, as well as by analysis of the best practices and traditions of highly effective Clubs. Simply stated, we take the young people who need us most and provide them with the best possible outcome-driven Club experience, so they may become academically successful, demonstrate good Character and Citizenship and live Healthy Lifestyles. OUR FORMULA FOR IMPACT A. “Serve The Young People Who Need Us Most” B. “Provide An Outcome-Driven Club Experience” We strive to provide the most powerful Club Experience possible – by implementing Five Key Elements for Positive Youth Development, offering high-yield activities and providing targeted programs 1. Five Key Elements for Positive Youth Development: Boys & Girls Clubs of America reviewed youth development research and worked with the Search Institute to identify the following key elements that ensure positive experiences for youth and help them achieve important outcomes: • A Safe, Positive Environment • Fun • Supportive Relationships • Opportunities and Expectations • Recognition 2. High-Yield Activities: Research tells us that youth need multiple opportunities to learn and grow at home, in school and in the community. The Harvard Family Research Project calls this “complementary learning”. High-yield activities are designed to provide youth with fun experiences that are hands-on and interactive; they intentionally develop critical thinking and other skills. By integrating high-yield activities into the Club Experience, we will help youth extend their learning beyond the regular school day, and ultimately, develop into enthusiastic, self-directed, lifelong learners. Often described as fun with a purpose, high-yield activities help members: • Gain new knowledge and skills or reinforce those learned in school • Experience new ways to apply knowledge • Engage in creative expression • Test their solutions to real-world issues • Work in groups to achieve a goal 3. Targeted Programs: Some 30 percent of youth report being involved in bullying. Nearly one in three U.S. high school students is overweight or obese. More than a million young people drop out of school each year. For many urgent, compelling reasons such as these, the Boys & Girls Club Movement has chosen to focus on helping the youth we serve achieve three priority outcomes: Academic Success, Good Character and Citizenship and Healthy Lifestyles. 4. Regular Attendance: Because we also know that attending the Club more frequently and over a greater length of time makes young people more likely to achieve positive outcomes, we must pursue strategies to increase attendance, program participation and member retention. C. “Achieve Priority Outcomes” As the Club strives to achieve greater and more consistent impact, we will apply a laser focus to bringing the outcome-driven Club Experience to life. This is about starting with our end in mind, ensuring that every aspect of our Club operations and programming helps our youth achieve: 1. Academic Success 2. Good Character & Citizenship 3. Healthy Lifestyles
