About This Cause
United Way of Eastern New Mexico Changes Lives United Way of Eastern New Mexico (UWENM) is a local non-profit organization that serves Curry, Roosevelt, Quay, and De Baca Counties. Our Mission is to unite neighbors and change lives by seeking partners who give, advocate, and volunteer to benefit our local community--especially through work that promotes child-wellbeing and youth success. We depend on local donors (individuals and businesses) to support our work. 3 Ways: Grants Services to Connect our Neighbors Direct Programs UWENM gives Grants to local agencies that meet the needs of local people every day. Through our support of these agencies UWENM is: fighting hunger stopping sexual assault, child abuse and domestic violence providing decent, affordable housing serving our elderly & disabled empowering our youth. 2022 Grant Partner Agencies (C=Curry; R=Roosevelt; Q=Quay): Arise Sexual Assault Services (CRQ) Clovis Meals on Wheels (C ) Curry Resident Senior Meal Assn (C) Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico (CRQ) Girl Scouts of NM Trails (CRQ) Habitat for Humanity of Roosevelt & Curry (CR) Hartley House-domestic violence shelter (CRQ) Mental Health Resources, Inc. (CRQ) Portales Meals on Wheels (R) Salvation Army-Clovis Corps (C ) Special Olympics New Mexico (CRQ) UWENM connects our community in two keyways: 211 Information & Referral Helpline: UWENM is a 211-call center for our area, answering over 2,000 calls each year from people seeking help with their challenges. Some of the top requests include food, housing, bill paying assistance, transportation, and health/mental health care. Our 211 Associates listen to the needs and refer callers to local resources when those resources are available. Volunteer Action Center: VolunteerENM.org is a Free website connecting community members to over 90 local agencies (non-profits, organizations, churches, clubs, and groups) that are doing work in our communities. This website greatly improves volunteer recruitment, retention, and communication allowing more work to be done across Eastern NM. Last year people used VolunteerENM.org to sign up and help over 1,500 times. *NEW* The app CauseConnect works with our website seamlessly. UWENM directly touches the lives of our neighbors in Curry, Roosevelt, Quay and De Baca Counties through our programs: UWENM’s Game Changers and Winter Warmth Funds allow us to assist our neighbors who need help to remain safe and secure in their homes. With Game Changers, so far 2022 UWENM has assisted 500 local families with rent and utility bill assistance totaling over $97,000. Plus, we have helped 7 families move from homelessness to permanent housing. Through our Winter Warmth Fund—UWENM provided heaters & window air conditioners to 35 families that were brought to our attention by home health care workers, pastors, or case managers. We also have provided minor home repairs for 3 families in critical need so they can stay safe in their homes. Youth Success Initiative: UWENM’s primary focus is to promote Youth Success and Child-wellbeing. We do this because 30% of Eastern NM kids (0-18y) live in poverty and 70% of local students are eligible for reduced and free lunch. UWENM refuses to let these statistics undermine the potential of our children and sabotage the prosperity of our communities. UWENM conducts various programs and projects to address the needs of area children and youth: Reality Check Day—day long financial literacy and adult life simulations for 9th graders. We conduct simulations for over 900 students in 7 school districts. This project depends on the dedication of 36 volunteers for every event date. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library—registering local kids birth to 5 years to receive FREE books mailed to their homes every month. UWENM is the affiliate for Roosevelt and De Baca County currently paying for 500 children to receive books each month—we would love to enroll all 1700 local children who are eligible. No Worries Wall—UWENM provides middle & high schools with hygiene items: deodorant, toothbrushes, tampons/pads, soap, laundry detergent, etc. Our goal is to help teens have a better day at school, since they won’t have to worry about a lack of these supplies at home. 100% Community strategy focuses on eliminating barriers to the 10 VITAL services needed for families to not only survive but thrive. This strategy is critical to long term sustainable change in community and family conditions, because we know that children living in households WITHOUT access to these 10 services experience higher rates of ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) which lead to greater challenges in their adult life which impacts our whole community. The 10 Services are Food, Housing, Health and Dental Care, Transportation, Mental Health and Behavioral Health Care, Parental Supports, Early Childhood Learning Programs, Youth Mentors, Community Schools, and Job Training. Action Teams of community leaders are being formed now to address the obstacles to each service that our community survey identified. UWENM and our Youth Success partners are committed to making these services accessible to 100% of our residents.
