Mission Statement
STC’s mission is to make a variety of mental health, substance abuse, and rehabilitative services affordable and available to individuals and families whose access would otherwise be limited or nonexistent. Our purpose is to facilitate positive change by providing the tools and coping strategies that prevent abuse, end the cycle of intergenerational trauma, and empower people to build healthier relationships that result in safer, happier, and more equitable communities. Over the years, we have launched numerous programs and developed a variety of specialized services to better address the mental health needs of disadvantaged and underserved populations.
About This Cause
STC began as a small team of active parents motivated by a collective desire to keep teens engaged in school and avoid a future derailed by drugs and alcohol. In 1972, after we applied and became a 501(c)(3) organization, our efforts quickly expanded to ensure that everyone in the community could access the resources and tools needed for a safe, healthy, and productive life. We hired licensed clinicians to inform and guide our vision, and by 1975, we were providing a wide range of outpatient substance use prevention and mental health services to hundreds of families per year, with most families reporting incomes well below the poverty level. Presently, we offer in-person and telehealth counseling at our in-kind clinic space in the La Mirada Resource Center, generously provided by the City of La Mirada, with whom we’ve partnered for nearly 40 years, and at our headquarters clinic in Santa Ana. Additionally, we offer remote and on-campus mental wellness programs to school districts and community colleges in Los Angeles and Orange County. We also operate Gerry House, a Drug Medi-Cal-certified residential treatment program for individuals 18 and over, through a 30+ year contract with the Orange County Health Care Agency. Furthermore, we oversee Kairos House, a transitional housing program for individuals living with AIDS/HIV and substance use disorders, funded by a grant from the City of Santa Ana. STC has received awards from the County of Orange, the Juvenile Corrections Program, The Register Charities, the National Education Corporation, United Way, Orange County Substance Abuse Prevention Network, and Disneyland. STC was also recently featured in the Los Cerritos Community News, and we have a Platinum Seal of Transparency, the highest level, which only 15% of nonprofits earn.
