Mission Statement
The main goal of the Humane Society of Greene County is to prevent animal suffering from overpopulation by way of spay/neuter programs, to eliminate neglect and abusive treatment of livestock by enforcing the statutes according to the Ohio State Revised Code, to promote education in the humane care of all animals, and to provide a pet food pantry for low income county residents.
About This Cause
Our prime goal is to help prevent pet overpopulation and, in 2020, 1768 cats and dogs were spayed or neutered through our programs. The first program is for low to medium level income residents who, after a small co-payment, receive a certificate allowing them to have their cat or dog spayed or neutered at one of our participating veterinarian offices. Our monthly spay/neuter cat clinics, on the other hand, are not income dependent but available to any Greene County resident caring for outside cats, including strays, at the low cost of $15 for males and $20 for females. The cost is kept minimal, just to cover our fees, so that people can afford to get the surgery for multiple cats. As of July 2021, a grand total of 8,929 cats have been spayed or neutered through these clinics since starting them in 2006. The Humane Society also has volunteer livestock investigators who respond to complaint calls regarding potential abuse or neglect of a variety of animals, including horses, goats, rabbits and llamas. The investigators will try to work with the animal owner on proper care and feeding and, if the owner needs assistance with food or veterinarian care, we do our best to provide what is necessary to help the animal. In some situations, a neglected or abused animal may need to be transferred to foster care and we cover the costs involved with that care. Additionally, our food pantry has become an absolute necessity to our low income residents who need help feeding their pets and we truly believe this assistance has helped many pet owners keep their animals rather than relinquish them to the shelter. We typically have up to 100 clients registered for this program at any given time. We are a 501(c)3 non profit organization composed of volunteers, with the exception of one employed paid a minimal amount to schedule appointments and handle the 300-400 phone calls we receive each month. We are also an independent program and receive no funding from the county or any of the national level animal associations.
