About This Cause

Capital City Education Alliance, Inc. (CCEAHartford) is the new identity for the organization formerly known as the Greater Hartford Jaycee Foundation (GHJF). CCEA's mission is to maximize the potential of students and prepare them to succeed in life. The organization has found through needs assessments that Greater Hartford lacks the following for youth: Unique youth programming that is focused around job readiness skills. In response to this need gap, CCEA created programming to provide early intervention, workforce readiness skills for developing adolescence. CCEA's unique program - Let’s Paint! offers a color and design-based curriculum that focuses on workforce readiness. Students learn commercial painting skills, gain an understanding of color theory, and work thru a curriculum focused on “soft” and “hard” skills for workplace effectiveness. All students are trained in color and design principles and have some input in the chosen color palette for the projects. In our school-year model, the participants identify their lead color combinations with the help of our color consultant then present them to the school for a school-wide vote, thereby enrolling the entire school in the process. Not only do the students learn the marketable skill of painting, they learn how to work collaboratively to complete a project and they also transform a space with paint, something they are extremely proud of. Past projects include: • Repainting storage garages located on Pope Park Highway in Hartford. This graffitied building was a eye sore for the residents in the area. Students in our program, along with volunteers transformed the garage doors into works of art. • Exterior and Interior of Boys & Girls club of Hartford. CCEA created a vibrant new career center and the exterior was completely transformed using a bold, high-energy color palette that was far more reflective of the vitality and progress that occurs inside the Club. CCEA works primarily with underprivileged students in the city of Hartford. All of our students speak English, but many live in bi-lingual households. Most of our students come from difficult family situations – working poor, unengaged parents, or poor living conditions. The amazing aspect of painting is that everyone can do it. To this end, we’ve had students with learning disabilities and mild autism working side-by-side with their peers and volunteers. Parents, teachers and administrators support the program because of the positive results that take place. Not only do we transform spaces, but we transform students too. Students work better in a group, they are more confident, less absenteeism, and their behavior has improved after participating in a Let's Paint! program.
