Mission Statement

CVLS mobilizes Chicago’s legal community to deliver traditional representation and innovative legal solutions to people working or living in poverty. We are Chicago pro bono.

About This Cause

Founded in 1964, Chicago Volunteer Legal Services (CVLS) provides a wide range of free civil legal aid to low income Chicagoans though the use of volunteer attorneys. A pro bono legal aid organization, CVLS’ mission is, “To mobilize Chicago’s legal community to deliver traditional representation and innovative legal solutions to people working or living in poverty”. CVLS serves as a general practice of law, defending mortgage foreclosures in low income neighborhoods, handling family and consumer cases, adoptions, guardianships and bankruptcy. Because we do not accept federal funding—and don’t have to abide by rigid government restrictions—we are able to assist a wider range of clients, including the working poor. Most of our clients are minority. Many are disabled. All are low income. CVLS is unique in its ability to offer a wide range of totally free legal services to those in need in Chicago. CVLS is recognized as the most comprehensive, most efficient and most cost-effective civil legal aid provider in Chicago.
