Mission Statement

The mission of the Science Museum of Virginia is to inspire Virginians to enrich their lives through science. The Museum is a catalyst for inspiration, a place that sparks curiosity and generates ideas in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Through hundreds of experiential exhibits, awe-inspiring artifacts and interactive technologies, the Museum presents dynamic science programming to hundreds of thousands of guests each year. The Museum features permanent exhibitions about space, health, electricity, and the earth—to name a few—and hosts visiting exhibitions from around the world. The Dome theater, at 76 feet, is the largest screen in Virginia and provides guests with the ultimate immersive experience.

About This Cause

From the legacy of our grand historic home inside a 100 year old train station to our quirky Rat Basketball team – we undoubtedly have a rich history and a bright future. Science literacy is a national priority, a fundamental competency necessary for success in today’s world. Science literacy informs decision-making whether you’re at the fuel pump or the ballot box. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) – are the currency of our technology-driven lives and the force behind not only our nation’s global competitiveness but each family’s personal health and financial stability. A key to living wage employment and a pathway out of poverty, science is the primary driver for innovation. Through STEM, we’re able to address the greatest challenges and major problems that affect our world. The Science Museum of Virginia is passionate about inspiring Virginians. We take our mission seriously . . . and for good reason. When compared to students around the world, our students are underperforming in STEM subjects. Too few of our students are pursuing careers in science, and girls, in particular, shy away from careers in engineering or technology. In addition, a growing population of students from low-income and minority communities continues to lag behind when it comes to understanding science and grasping its relevance. Capturing and sustaining a child’s interest in science takes a thoughtful strategy, particularly when so many attractive and exciting activities are competing for their attention. With time and financial pressures, test-based performance standards and traditional teaching methods, our schools alone cannot inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators. They need help from informal learning environments. Larger than life experiences that immerse students in science, will enable students to explore their world. We make science engaging, meaningful and fun. We must, like the technology that surrounds us, constantly reinvent ourselves. Our future plans include: • Exhibits. Inspire guests with new exhibits that encourage them to build, analyze, take apart, test, invent, and create – all the while grasping the elevance of science in their lives. • Facility. Continue to preserve our historic architecture while dramatically improving the guest experience. • Endowment. Grow the endowment for sustainability. An investment for the future, the endowment will support the maintenance of existing exhibits, professional staff development and innovative and compelling companion programming to enhance the visitor experience. • Community Outreach/Partnerships. Enhance science learning and public support for science education by investing in partnerships with organizations that extend our reach throughout the Commonwealth. As the marketing agency for science, the Science Museum of Virginia invites guests to touch exhibits and encourages them to ask “Why?” and “What if?” Whether we’re reaching out to students and teachers or parents and grandparents, our style is to engage people in ways that stir imagination and pique curiosity. We believe that we can create a better world by continuing to ignite the wonder that inspires learning.
