About This Cause

Tracing its history to 1809, Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut’s mission is to promote the well-being and development of all children and their families, in particular to give priority to the unmet needs of children lacking physical, emotional and intellectual care and nurturing. The Agency’s programs provide services to address children’s mental health and physical healthcare, child abuse prevention, the treatment of family violence, teen pregnancy, childcare, children’s safety and accident prevention and parent education. Over the past twenty years, three venerable children’s service agencies have joined forces with Child and Family. In 1991, the New London Day Nursery (founded in 1906), in 2000, the Child Guidance Clinic of S. E. CT (founded in 1954) and in 2003, the B. P. Learned Mission (founded in 1859) merged with Child and Family Agency. Child and Family Agency accomplishes its mission by providing a number of integrated services to children and families living in New London, Middlesex, New Haven and Windham Counties. These services include: out-of-school programming at the B.P. Learned Mission in New London, school-based health and social service centers in New London, Groton, Norwich, and Stonington. Further, the agency offers child and family counseling at centers located in Essex, New London and Groton, child care at centers located in New London and Groton, and several home based counseling and child development programs that serve children and their families in all three counties. Last year, over 18,000 children were served in 79 towns in New London, Middlesex, New Haven Counties, the Child & Family Agency service region. Child & Family has approximately 190 staff - social workers, teachers, psychologists, nurse practitioners, administrators, and support staff - dedicated to helping children at 28 service centers. A non-profit agency with a $12.5 million budget, program funding comes from private, state, United Way and federal sources. Fees for service reflect costs. A sliding scale assures that no one will be refused service for financial reasons. In 1944, a group of 12 women organized to aid the Agency and its work, creating the auxiliaries that are now organized in six areas: Essex River Valley, Lyme/Old Lyme, East Lyme, New London/Waterford, Groton and Mystic/Noank/Stonington. The approximately 670 Auxiliary members are a diverse group of volunteers who give generously of their time and talent through caring for children, fundraising events, and educational services to further the mission of the Agency. The heads of the auxiliaries also serve on the board of directors of the Agency.
