About This Cause

Bexar County Partners for Youth-Volunteers in Probation is a non profit 501c3 organization which works with troubled youth under the supervision of the Probation Department. Although there are many mentoring programs in the community, the volunteers for those organizations do not feel comfortable working with justice involved youth. That is why it is so important to provide in house mentors for this population. When recruiting, the potential volunteers are individuals that chose to work with our children because they understand the importance of the youth receiving mentorship. We match supportive, caring adults with the youth that are under the supervision of the department. The match is for one year; however, we ask that our mentors spend at least one hour a week or four hours in total a month with their mentee based on the mentor's availability. At the year completion, we have a celebration for the mentee and mentor for successfully completing the program. The mentoring relationship increases grades, school engagement, school attendance, and trust. It has a lasting impact on the youth and their future accomplishments. Throughout the year, we support both the youth and the mentor by providing school supplies, school uniforms/clothing, and hygiene items. We also provide gift cards to the mentor for enrichment activities as well as recreational activities to share with the mentee. The department is not able to provide a budget for our program; therefore, all services are sustained by fund raisers and donations. We could not do this important work, in touching these children's lives without the assistance of the community and businesses that continue to support our mission. We provide these children with the opportunity to live a safe, healthy and productive life. Our mentors are making a difference! Please consider joining our mentoring family or making a donation to assist us in our continued efforts in changing the lives of children. Thank you! Peggy A. Cano, Volunteer Coordinator.
