Mission Statement
The Golden Age Foundation has been serving Leisure World, an active senior community of approximately 9500 residents in the city of Seal Beach, along the Orange County coast of Southern California for over 49 years. The Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization established in 1973. Our organization is entirely staffed by fellow resident volunteers and all services provided are free of charge. The Golden Age Foundation is entirely funded by donations which are used to support safe, active, independent living to an entire community of senior citizens living in their own homes. Residents of Leisure World range in age from 55 to 100 plus years old. Through the generous support of residents, clubs, organizations and businesses the Golden Age Foundation has organized and implemented many programs that have benefitted our community. Our goal is to empower our community residents to lead purposeful, healthy and quality lives. Our Core Programs include: A Hospitality Center that serves morning coffee and treats to lonely residents to provide a place for socialization and to meet their neighbors; A Mobility Aids Program which is staffed by trained volunteers who fit, train and loan assistive devices to persons with a mobility impairment to assist walking or otherwise improve mobility and promote active independent living. Last year over 1,100 Leisure World residents obtained a mobility aid on site from this program, which represented approximately 12% of the community population; The GAF Income Tax Preparation Program is staffed by AARP trained volunteers from Leisure World to prepare basic State and Federal tax forms, annually approximately 900 residents or nearly 13% of the households in the community have their taxes prepared by this program, completely free of charge; the goal of the quarterly Document Shredding Program is to support community wide recycling efforts and help prevent identity theft; and the two Environmental Programs which include quarterly battery and florescent bulb recycling events help to protect our planet by removing thousand of pounds of hazardous material safely.
About This Cause
The Golden Age Foundation of Leisure World Seal Beach has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund projects throughout our community. We have five ongoing core programs: a Hospitality Center; Mobility Aid Program; Income Tax Preparation Service in partnership with AARP; Document Shredding Service; and Environmental Programs which include battery and florescent light bulb collection and disposal to preserve our environment. Each year donations from the Foundation are used for enhancement and sustainability of existing programs. Recent GAF donations have been used to fund the purchase of two Handicapped Accessible Buses; Bus Benches with Shelters within the community; Audio-Alert Traffic Signals to promote safety; the purchase of New Exercise Equipment for the newly renovated gymnasium; a community Emergency Communication System; new Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training equipment for the onsite Healthcare Center training program; Equipment for the hearing impaired in our Learning Centers; and a Serenity Garden for Mission Park near Clubhouse 2. Additional funds were used to upgrade video and sound equipment in the Clubhouses, replace ice machines and replace furnishings for the Hospitality Center. The last two years were very challenging as we faced a pandemic that deeply affected many in our especially vulnerable community. Covid-19 claimed over 1,000,000 American lives, approximately 66% of the Covid deaths were senior citizens, and Leisure World residents were among those lost. Our Covid-19 crisis response included: during the early days of the pandemic a resident volunteer Sewing Brigade who made over 36,000 cotton face masks in the Leisure World sewing lab over many months of coordinated work; to reduce the spread of the virus the masks were distributed to residents, as well as those who work behind the scenes in Leisure World providing much needed services to our community, eventually cotton disposable mask were obtained and distributed throughout the community by GAF volunteers; the Golden Age Foundation contributed over $100,000 to support Meals on Wheels of Long Beach and Orange County to provide meals to residents who could not afford the service and were unable to do for themselves during the pandemic; and the GAF provided volunteers to facilitate the Optum/Golden Rain Foundation Covid-19 Vaccine Program and Flu Vaccine Program at the onsite Health Center. The GAF recently facilitated the formation of a coalition of top Orange County agencies that focus on aging. This coalition includes the Council on Aging, Alzheimer’s Orange County and Adult Protective Services and is now based in Leisure World. Some of the programs offered by the coalition to our residents include: Friendly Visitors which are trained Leisure World volunteers who regularly visit or call isolated individuals; the Reconnect Program which provides short-term private comprehensive services to seniors experiencing emotional challenges and overall health barriers; the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program; Alzheimers OC’s programs which helps people struggling with memory loss; and Adult Protective Services serves to protect seniors from abuse, neglect and exploitation.
