About This Cause
Mission Statement The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) mission is to advance the well-being of the nation by promoting a vibrant engineering profession and by marshalling the expertise and insights of eminent engineers to provide independent advice to the federal government on matters involving engineering and technology. Brief Overview and Background Founded in 1964, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is a private, independent, nonprofit institution that serves as advisor to the federal government on matters of engineering and technology. The NAE operates under the same congressional act of incorporation that established the National Academy of Sciences, signed in 1863 by President Lincoln. In addition to its role as advisor to the federal government, the NAE also conducts independent studies to examine important topics in engineering and technology. The NAE has more than 2,000 peer-elected members and foreign associates, senior professionals in business, academia, and government who are among the world’s most accomplished engineers. They provide the leadership and expertise for numerous projects focused on the relationships between engineering, technology, and the quality of life. The NAE membership is organized in twelve sections representing broad engineering categories. These include Aerospace Engineering (Section 1), Bioengineering (Section 2), Chemical Engineering (Section 3), Civil Engineering (Section 4), Computer Science & Engineering (Section 5), Electric Power/Energy Systems Engineering (Section 6), Electronics Engineering (Section 7), Industrial, Manufacturing & Operational Systems Engineering (Section 8), Materials Engineering (Section 9), Mechanical Engineering (Section 10), Earth Resources Engineering (Section 11), and Special Fields & Interdisciplinary Engineering (Section 12). The NAE is also a member of the National Academies, which includes the NAE, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the Institute of Medicine (IOM), and the National Research Council (NRC). The NAE is governed by its Council, consisting of 6 officers and 12 councillors elected by NAE members. The president of the National Academy of Sciences serves as a member of the NAE Council ex officio. Charles M. Vest, President Emeritus of MIT serves as NAE’s current President, and Irwin M. Jacobs, philanthropist and founder of Qualcomm, serves as the current NAE Chairman. The National Academy of Engineering is tasked with identifying and illuminating issues at the intersections of engineering, technology, and society that impact our quality of life. Studies, symposia, and public information activities are carried out both independently by the NAE Program Office and jointly with other units of the National Academies. Some of these activities have influenced legislation pertaining to public policy regarding engineering and technology issues. For example, Rising Above the Gathering Storm helped bring about the America COMPETES Act, America's Energy Future is influencing energy discussions in Congress and around the world, the 2011 Deepwater Horizon report is setting the standards in best practices in deep water drilling and safety, among many others. The NAE’s independent assets and operating funds are held in the National Academy of Engineering Fund (NAEF), a tax-exempt corporation under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. It was created to support the mission and goals of the NAE and its tax identification number is 23-7284092.
