Mission Statement
Creative Growth Art Center advances the inclusion of artists with developmental disabilities in contemporary art and strengthens community by providing a supportive studio environment and gallery representation.
About This Cause
Founded in 1974 in Oakland, California, Creative Growth empowers under-represented artists to claim space and earn recognition by sharing their powerful artwork and voices with diverse audiences around the world. Daily programs are offered to 140 adult and young adult artists. Facilitated by professional artists, the studio provides artistic support, materials, and space for painting, drawing, ceramics, wood working, fiber arts, printmaking, and digital media, as well as online classes. The gallery exhibits and represents artwork by Creative Growth artists, securing a place for their work in major collections and institutions worldwide. It presents public exhibitions in the Oakland gallery and represents Creative Growth artists at national and international art fairs every year. Artwork made at Creative Growth has been acquired by prominent collections worldwide, including MoMA, SFMOMA, the Smithsonian, the Studio Museum of Harlem, Collection de L’Art Brut, American Folk Art Museum, and The Museum of Everything. The sale of artwork is split 50-50 between the artist and Creative Growth, which uses the proceeds to purchase materials and support programs for all artists.
