About This Cause

The Cataula Volunteer Fire Department is located in rural Harris County, Georgia. Harris County has almost no commercial tax base and tax revenues are limited, making the funding for a "County" Fire Department impossible. The county must rely 100% on volunteers to provide fire services. The Cataula Volunteer Fire Department primarily provides fire prevention, fire protection, rescue, hazardous and emergency medical services to a 90 square mile rural jurisdiction with a population of 9,200 residents. Our fire district is located in the most populated area and primarily consist of 2971 single family dwellings, 16 small business/stores, 11 churches, 7 gas stations, 2 large schools and a grocery store. Our department also provides Automatic Aid to three (3) fire departments and Mutual Aid to eight (8) other fire departments in Harris County including Georgia Forestry. In addition to providing services to Harris County, we have a mutual aid agreement with Muscogee County, a neighboring county, which includes the city of Columbus, and a mutual aid agreement with the Fort Benning Army Base. The mutual aid agreements state we will respond with personnel and with any equipment these departments may need. Our firefighters are men and women willing to leave the comfort of their homes at a moment's notice and put their lives on the line to ensure the safety of their own community. When there is a fire, they go. Without hesitation. Without pay. The service provided by your volunteer fire department is priceless. When a fire or emergency situation arises, time is of the essence. Our fire department provides the reaction time necessary to stifle a burning home, rescue victims and salvage valuables in rural communities. Training, maintaining equipment, maintaining apparatus and maintaining the stations are also duties which require their time. In addition, the firefighters spend many hours each year in the community and local schools teaching fire awareness and safety to civic organizations and children. Volunteer firefighters get no personal gain for the heroic work they do. Their greatest reward is knowing they are helping their neighbors.
