Mission Statement

KCS envisions a world where immigrant communities remain grounded in their heritage and work together with the broader community to build a better society at large. KCS’ mission is to be a bridge for Korean immigrants and the wider Asian community to fully integrate into society and overcome any economic, health and linguistic barriers so that they become independent and thriving members of the community. We accomplish this mission by providing culturally competent programs in the areas of Aging, Education, Immigration, Workforce Development, Public Health and Mental Health.

About This Cause

Founded in 1973 and incorporated in July 1974 as the first community-based social service agency targeting the Korean population, The Korean Community Services of Metropolitan New York, Inc. (KCS) is a voluntary, nonprofit 501(c)(3) community service agency with the objective to develop and deliver a broad range of programs to meet the various needs of the community. KCS was started to serve the individuals of the Korean-American immigrant community and their families, but it extended its services to non Korean-American while the interactions of the immigrants getting connected with other communities, and emerging of the second and third generations who were born in this new homeland. KCS serves over 1,300 individuals daily governed by 12 board members, run by 92 full-time staff, 127 part-time staff, and dozens of volunteers who are all working to make our community better in locations around the greater New York area. There are ten site locations in the New York City area including five in Queens, three offices in Manhattan, and two locations in New Jersey. Two senior centers in Queens and one in upper Manhattan provide congregate breakfast, lunch, educational/recreational programs, case assistance, information/referrals, friendly visit, telephone alert, transportation, home delivered meals for home-bound seniors, and caregiver training. Immigration/community services in Queens help new immigrants with English/civic education, computer training, civic engagement, education on immigration affairs, and free legal counseling conducted by our in-house attorney and legal team. Workforce development services include Senior Employment Services & Employment Program (SCSEP), Job readiness services, and linkage to employers. We also participate in the federally funded AmeriCorps Senior Volunteer program, where we recruit and place volunteers within our and partner organizations. Our Public Health and Research Center department located in Queens and Manhattan offices has been helping the members of Korean/Asian immigrant community in various issues including hepatitis B, diabetes, healthy nutrition, health screening, women health, social services. Within our Education department is Youth/Family services that include Youth Community Action Program(YCAP), English classes, Korean 101, as well as Citizenship test prep classes. KCS is the only Korean non-profit with a licensed article 31 Mental Health Clinic in New York that provides counseling and treatment, individual and group sessions, preventive classes, referrals, and crises interventions. KCS aims to develop more services to meet the needs of the community such as medical clinic and a larger and more modern facility to implement comprehensive services as a one-stop model. KCS is currently securing capital funding to move the Older Adult Centers to the headquarter location in Bayside. Please refer to KCS' website for more details.
