About This Cause
Founded in 1959, the Chinese Folk Dance Association is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit community group based in San Francisco. It is dedicated to promoting understanding of Chinese culture through dance. Most students come from the local San Francisco and Chinatown communities. Learning Chinese dance helps in their cultural identity, and community participation helps to strengthen respect and diversity among minorities. Classes are free but students and dancers are encouraged to share responsibility in teaching and performing, thereby learning teamwork and discipline. The CFDA has performed all over the Bay Area, L.A, and the Sacramento River Delta such as Isleton and Walnut Grove, old towns where some of the early Chinese immigrants had settled. We participate in and our students volunteer in local events and street fairs. We have also organized full length performances in venues such as the Palace of Fine Arts, Cowell Theater and Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. We are available for short performances in local events. All our activities are supported by the generous contributions of our volunteers and donations from sponsors and supporters, large and small.
