Mission Statement

The Firefighters Burn Institute is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded by the Sacramento Area Firefighters Local 522 in 1973, for the purpose of establishing a local burn treatment facility; providing recovery programs for burn survivors; providing fire and burn prevention through public education; funding education for burn team professionals, firefighters, and burn survivors; and supporting burn treatment and rehabilitation research.

About This Cause

FFBI PROGRAMS: Firefighters Kids Camp ~ a week long, life enriching, fun filled camp for burn survivors ages 7 – 17 and their siblings encouraging personal growth alongside other children in various stages of recovery. Little Heroes Preschool Burn Camp ~ a 3 day recovery program designed to help preschool burn survivors ages 3 – 6 and their families learn to cope with the challenges of burn recovery. Family Burn Relief which provides assistance with lodging, food and transportation costs as well as mental health support to families and individuals who have recently suffered the trauma of a burn injury. Liaison Response Team ~ a team of firefighters dedicated to supporting the well-being of firefighters & their families in the aftermath of a burn injury. Team BRIGHT (Burn Recovery in Groups Healing Together) ~ monthly outings with firefighters for children currently receiving burn injury treatment at Shriners Hospital for Children No. CA. Burn Survivor Retreats ~ an annual retreat for adult burn survivors where personal growth is experienced and new coping skills are obtained while meeting others who are going through similar situations. BurnNet ~ a monthly burn survivor support group co-facilitated with UC Davis Hospital. Youth Firesetter Program ~ an intervention program for youth and their family members, facilitated by fire, probation, burn and healthcare professionals, providing families assistance through assessments, psychological referrals and education. Prevention & Education Programs ~ fire prevention education presentations at school assemblies and at public events such as safety fairs and Camp Smokey at the CA State Fair. Scholarships ~ educational scholarships for burn survivors, firefighters and burn professionals to attend college, university, trade school or technical school, as well as the American Burn Association Conference and the World Burn Congress. All programs are offered free of charge, including air transportation to both children’s camps for which participants come from all over the USA.
