Mission Statement

The mission of Alum Rock Counseling Center (ARCC) is to heal families and inspire youth to reach their full potential. Founded in 1974, ARCC is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting mental/behavioral health & academic success for underserved youth and families of color throughout Santa Clara County, with a focus on the Latinx community in East San Jose.

About This Cause

Healing Trauma, Overcoming Poverty, Enabling School Success Today, ARCC offers 10 different behavioral health programs, providing services in homes, in 30+ high-need schools, in two (no-cost) drop-in wellness centers for youth (ages 12-25), out in the community, via telehealth, and in our clinic based in East San Jose. The agency proudly serves 5,000+ low-income youth/young people (ages 0-25) and their families annually, in particular targeting those who are at highest risk for academic failure and a life in the criminal justice system. We serve a large proportion of immigrant families, many of whom come from households where caregivers are monolingual Spanish-speakers and/or where at least one adult is undocumented, making it difficult for them to navigate the educational and healthcare systems. In FY24, ARCC’s clients were 94% ethnically diverse, with 83% being Latinx. ARCC’s extensive Continuum of Care ranges from prevention and early intervention to trauma recovery and support. Current services include: • Individual & family counseling • Youth mentoring & role models • Substance use prevention & life skills training • Connecting Families to Needed Resources (e.g., food banks, housing support, vision/dental care etc) • School-based counseling & support services • No cost, integrated care/mental health drop-in centers for youth • Training and resources for new parents (First 5) • Advocacy for families involved with child welfare or juvenile justice • Trauma education & treatment A unique component of ARCC’s success is the agency’s culturally sensitive approach to hiring and program delivery, including an understanding that mental health stigma is real and can stand in the way of youth and families getting the support they need. ARCC’s staff respect and reflect the culture and values of their clients, with many having lived through the types of experiences their clients are working to overcome. Overall, 74% of ARCC’s direct service staff is ethnically diverse with 63% being Hispanic/Latino and 73% bilingual. AREAS OF IMPACT ARCC will work to ensure that: 1. Our youth and families have resources for overcoming behavioral health concerns including substance use and mental health challenges. 2. All of our kids are kindergarten ready. 3. Our youth graduate from middle school, high school and beyond. 4. Our youth and families are free from involvement with the justice and/or social services systems. 5. Our homes, schools and neighborhoods are safe – free of violence and dangerous behaviors.
