About This Cause
The Desert Tortoise Preserve Committee is a non-profit organization formed in 1974 to promote the welfare of the desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) in its native wild state. Committee members share a deep concern for the continued preservation of the tortoise and its habitat in the southwestern deserts. Desert Tortoise Preserve Committee activities include: - Establishing and managing nature preserves for the desert tortoise and other sensitive desert species - Educational outreach to schools, community groups, scientists, and public policy makers - Providing interpretative programs each Spring at the Desert Tortoise Research Natural Area with on-site Naturalists - Fostering innovative research on recovering desert tortoise populations, protecting desert tortoise habitat, and restoring habitat to ensure the survival of this endangered species The Committee raises funds through membership dues and tax deductible donations, interpretive programs and the sale of merchandise. In recognition of our 50 years of conservation we have been awarded the Chevron Conservation Award and distinguished partnership Awards from the U.S. Department of Interior. Recently the Committee has achieved national accreditation by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission.
