Mission Statement
The Friends of Irving Public Library supports the library's mission to be a center of the community, improving the quality of life of Irving residents through community engagement, educational events and advanced technology through fundraising and advocacy.
About This Cause
The Friends of the Irving Public Library began as a private corporation made up of Irving citizens dedicated to promoting interest in and welfare of the Irving Public Library. Originally called, "Irving Municipal Library Association" it was recorded as a non- profit corporation on Sept. 5, 1961. The incorporators were: William H. Yeandle, L.E. Keller and Mrs. Victor Alexander. The Friends of Irving Public Library spreads reading and the love of books in our community by raising funds for library programs, materials such as books and magazines, and resources like databases. They are among the city's most fervent literacy boosters, working hard at author programs, book sales, and the North Texas Teen Book Festival. The annual Friends book sale attracts book hunters from all over North Texas, and the August Teacher's book sale helps stock up local classrooms with inexpensive child and teen reading material. Over the years these original founders, numerous volunteers and the current board members have given and continue to give their tireless efforts in support of the Irving Public Library. Thus for over 62 years The Friends of the Irving Public Library have expanded services and opportunities for their members and for the library. IPL touches the lives of many local and area readers through it's programs and events. The annual Summer Reading Challenge encourages and engages children and teens through activities and awards for reading through the summer. The library and community partners have celebrated 10 years of city-wide reading through One Book, One Irving and the National Endowment for the Art's Big Read. Starting in 2015, IPL has partnered with local school districts and area public libraries in launching the North Texas Teen Book Festival, taking place in the spring at the Irving Convention Center. These programs are made possible through the support of local organizations and the efforts of the Friends of Irving Public Library.
