Mission Statement
The Stecher and Horowitz Foundation serves as an incubator of talent in the world of classical music. It acts as a conduit to discover, uncover, and present these remarkable young pianists to an audience awaiting the latest musical gems to be unearthed. This concept was inspired by the inquisitive faces passing through the doors of the original Stecher and Horowitz School of the Arts. Concerned about the road that lay ahead for the many aspiring musicians trained, it was realized that the next chapter in the Foundation’s mission was the need to serve as mentors through the flagship programs, The New York International Piano Competition and The Young Artist Series. This new phase encourages and creates opportunities for these amazing young pianists who often lack the means and know-how to pursue a career.
About This Cause
The Stecher and Horowitz Foundation is committed to furthering the education, recognition, and fostering of this generation of talented young musicians, as well as helping to sustain and preserve the essence of our cultural life through audience development and community involvement. Directly serving pianists ages 16-25, the Foundation seeks and develops emerging talent through its flagship programs: The New York International Piano Competition and The Young Artists Series. The Foundation helps aspirants achieve their personal and professional goals through mentoring, career guidance, artistic development, and performance opportunities throughout the year. Individuality and excellence are mainstays of the Foundation’s core objectives, focusing the young artists’ horizons toward the pursuit of a realistic and attainable career in music. One of the Foundation’s most visible programs is The Documentary Series, presented in more than 100 cities nationwide by American Public Television and National Educational Telecommunications Association. This trilogy of diversified films introduces the public to Speaking with Music, Beyond the Practice Room, and On a Personal Note. Within these documentaries, a young artists' ambition to succeed is explored in depth. The films reveal the realities they encounter as they dedicate their lives to a field coming under greater pressure as its audience continues to diminish. The trilogy of documentaries draws an evocative portrait of Melvin Stecher and Norman Horowitz, duo-pianists, who created the competition and whose reminiscences reveal the contrast between their own careers commencing in the 50s, with much more limited opportunities and challenges for young pianists today. The documentaries are available through The Stecher and Horowitz Foundation.
