Mission Statement
Mission: Caring for animals, inspiring communities.
About This Cause
Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh (HARP) is one of the largest animal welfare organizations in Pennsylvania, providing services to tens of thousands of animals each year at our two domestic shelters and wildlife rehabilitation center. Our mission is “caring for animals, inspiring communities”. Formed in 2017, Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh is the result of a merger between the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (established in 1909) and Western Pennsylvania Humane Society (established in 1874), each with independently rich histories of serving our community’s animals in need. HARP continues the legacies of our predecessors with the task of providing enhanced services to domestic and wild animals alike, while bringing greater efficiency in animal care processes, staff training, and cutting-edge practices to one cohesive organization. HARP serves as a resource to residents from the greater Pittsburgh region at its three locations: • North Side: Located in the heart of Pittsburgh’s North Side business district, our Western Avenue location offers adoptable companion animals, canine training classes and, a veterinary medical center that provides free and low cost spay and neuter, vaccines, wellness checks and medical treatment, along with walk-in hours. • East Side: Like the North Side, this location also offers adoptable companion animals, canine training classes, a veterinary medical center that provides free and low cost spay and neuter, vaccines, wellness checks and medical treatment, and walk-in hours. Additionally, it contains two (2) community rooms used for meetings, training and professional development. Furthermore, through our contract with the City of Pittsburgh Animal Control, we receive, house and care for lost, stray and seized animals from the city of Pittsburgh. • Wildlife Side: HARP’s wildlife rehabilitation center is located just east of Pittsburgh in Verona, PA. The WLC provides expert care to sick, injured, and orphaned wild animals. Three buildings are located on the 16-acre campus; an administration building used by staff and the education team, a fully-licensed wildlife medical center that specializes in the care of native Pennsylvania wildlife; and, a third building used as a pre-release space for animals as they are acclimating and being prepared to be released. The WLC admits over 4,000 animals every year and has treated over 40,000 animals since opening its doors. HARP is a haven for all animals, wild and domestic. We do not restrict length of stay for our companion animals, and wildlife that can be rehabilitated will remain with us until they can safely be released to their natural habitats.
