Mission Statement
At the 103-year-old Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh (ULGP), South Western Pennsylvanians join together in efforts designed to enable African Americans to achieve economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights.
About This Cause
Recently ranked as one of the nation’s highest performing affiliates for the third time in succession, the ULGP offers vital programs through the Center for Leadership & Economic Self Reliance and through the Housing and Family & Child Development Departments. Urban League programs and services: • Help connect adults with general employment and training services, leading to full or part-time jobs; • Aid men and women over the age of 55 in obtaining employment through the Urban Senior Jobs Program; • Engage youth in various Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) related out-of-school activities; • Facilitate the graduation of young Black males from the Black Male Leadership Development Institute and young Black females from the Black Female Leadership Development Institute; • Help individuals avoid eviction and/or move into new housing units; • Provide health education/information services for individuals and families; • Distribute Thanksgiving provisions and other essentials to qualifying families; • Facilitate developmental screenings for children through the Family Support Centers at Duquesne, East Hills and Northview Heights; • Prepare families for first time homeownership; • Enlist volunteers to coach and mentor youth, advocate for removal of barriers to educational and economic advancement, and assist the Urban League in fulfilling its mission.
