Mission Statement

YWCA Greater Pittsburgh is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization that empowers women and their families, advocates for fair and equitable conditions, and challenges social and racial injustice.

About This Cause

Since its proud beginnings in 1867, the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh has worked to empower women and their families, advocate for fair and equitable conditions, and challenge social and racial injustice. As society has changed, so have the challenges we face. But women’s underlying need for support and encouragement that empowers them to take command of their lives and their families remains. Today’s YW forges a trail of leadership, advocacy, and action wherever it recognizes a community need. We speak out against racism – and honor those who help eliminate racial inequity in everyday life. We navigate and support disadvantaged women in their journey toward improved breast health. We offer comprehensive, coordinated services to struggling women – and house recovering women who have nowhere else to go. We teach middle school girls that it’s ok to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math and engage high school students in meaningful discussion on dating violence. We refer thousands of working families to child care providers – and support thousands of children by distributing child care subsidies.
