About This Cause

Angels' Place, Inc. is a non-profit, non-sectarian social service agency serving two generations of young people. We provide the opportunity for single parents who are full-time students and have incomes of less than 125% of the federal poverty level to complete their education, secure meaningful employment, establish careers and become self-sufficient citizens. Through no-pay child care and family support programs that embody the best practices of education, family and child development, Angels' Place provides a loving, nurturing, safe and healthy environment that every parent and child deserves. In a family-like setting the staff and volunteers support, encourage and guide both generations toward realization of their full potential. Angels' Place is truly ""a place to grow"" for parents, children, staff, Board members and other volunteers. Founded in 1984 as Mom's House, Inc. of Pittsburgh, we have enabled hundreds of parents to complete their educations, find meaningful employment and break the cycle of poverty that often is the situation of families headed by single parents. In 2003 the name changed, but the philosophy, programs, policies, assets, and core staff and Board members that the community has come to respect and trust, all remained the same. Every year in Allegheny County, PA about 650 babies are born to single 15- to 19-year-olds. Over two-thirds of the babies are raised by their young single mothers. About 70% of their young mothers never finish high school and the babies join more than 18,000 other children living in poverty in our county. Their mothers subsist as unskilled employees or recipients of public assistance. Because the mother's education is almost always cut short, both generations have little hope of escaping poverty. For single parents with financial challenges and their children, for 30 years Angels' Place has been an escape route to lives of hope and achievement. At our locations in Swissvale, and in the North Side and Brookline in Pittsburgh, student parents receive a comprehensive program of free services: * assistance in meeting food, clothing and other basic needs * child care and early childhood education while parents attend class full-time * facilitated discussion of parenting, relationship, academic, and other life skills * counseling * tutoring, when needed * opportunities for growth through referrals to community partners. Angels' Place takes a practical, progressive and compassionate approach to the problems associated with single parenthood, inadequate education, and financial dependency. Because the agency takes a holistic approach, we have a significant opportunity to help families change their lives permanently. All Angels' Place clients have incomes of no more than125% of the federal poverty level. Many of our enrolled parents are on the Honor Roll or Dean's List at their schools. Over the past 30 years hundreds of past student-parents have been graduated from our program and from their schools. Angels' Place's graduates now are pursuing careers in accounting, law, the health professions, architecture, education, information science, social work, and many other disciplines and trades. Research indicates that - particularly for youngsters in the lowest income groups - children who have quality preschool experiences are more likely to enter school prepared to learn, and less likely to require special education. Angels' Place is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the gold standard of early childhood education. Enrolled preschoolers here recently mastered 97% of kindergarten readiness skills prior to entering kindergarten. Many go on to do above average work in the schools to which they transition from Angels' Place, with some entering accelerated programs. Studies of quality early education show that benefits persist into adulthood. Children who participate in quality preschools are less likely to drop out of high school than those who do not take part, and they go on to post-secondary education more frequently. Federal studies have demonstrated that each $1 spent on quality early childhood education of at-risk children results in a savings of $7 later in special education expenses and costs for crime and incarceration. Government funds made up less than 7% of our budget in the most recent fiscal year. The large majority of our budget is contributed by individuals, families, foundations, businesses, houses of worship and community groups, making it possible for Angels' Place to foster life-changing successes without charging fees to enrolled families. Contributors have a special opportunity to join with Angels' Place in improving the lives of young parents and the lives of their children, setting both on the path to productive adulthood.
