Mission Statement

Our Mission: JRS supports individuals with psychiatric, developmental or intellectual disabilities, helping them to live, learn, work and socialize as valued members of the community.

About This Cause

JRS knows that adults living with disabilities want the same things we all want: our own home, friends, work – whether paid or volunteer – and a place for ourselves in the community. Through the JRS network of support services, the clubhouse model psychiatric rehabilitation program, and other social and educational initiatives, participants in JRS programs develop the skills and confidence they need to experience the miracle of an ordinary life. In turn, their families experience the peace of mind that comes with knowing their loved ones are cared about, growing, and enjoying the benefits of independence and community. Rooted in Jewish culture and traditions, JRS welcomes individuals from all backgrounds. The organization has made a life-changing impact on hundreds of our neighbors, friends, and family members. The Sally and Howard Levin Clubhouse is a warm, welcoming community where adults whose lives have been disrupted by mental illness come together to discover and develop their strengths and abilities. There, they can build confidence and gain valuable social and vocational skills that prepare them for more productive, rewarding, meaningful lives. Clubhouse members are adults from all backgrounds. They have in common a history of mental illness and the desire to grow, develop, and work together toward recovery. Clubhouse members and staff - referred to as colleagues - operate as a team, working side by side to organize and complete the tasks required to keep the program operating. Involvement in the work of the clubhouse is a great way to get to know others and to gain the skills and confidence everyone needs to live a healthy and fulfilling life. QUOTE: “Being a part of the Clubhouse at JRS makes me feel like I belong…It has given me the gift of being able to step into the confident woman I once knew.” Jan, Member, Sally and Howard Levin Clubhouse The JRS Supported Living Program helps individuals with disabilities to participate and thrive in their community of choice. The program provides a range of individualized supports to adults with psychiatric, intellectual or developmental disabilities residing independently in their own homes or apartments. In partnership with agencies like ACTION-Housing, JRS also provides group-based support to several affordable apartment buildings in Squirrel Hill. We run wellness workshops, host holiday parties, and provide tenants with support and a strong sense of community. Whether in a group setting or a client’s home, the Supported Living Program emphasizes skill-building and self-sufficiency, honors individual choices, and assists people in becoming contributing and valued members of the community. The JSSN (Jewish Singles Social Network) is a member-driven organization established in partnership with the JCC, and includes people of all backgrounds. With the support of a JRS staff advisor, the JSSN meets weekly at the JCC. The group plans and carries out monthly social activities for interested adults with intellectual or psychiatric disabilities. Members (who may or may not receive other JRS services) independently organize, pay for and enjoy JSSN activities.   Families in Transition Families in Transition (FIT) is a JRS initiative designed to support individuals with disabilities and their families through a variety of life stages. It connects them with resources as they transition out of school and the system of services available to children, and into the adult world. In partnership with other community agencies, it holds educational workshops for such families, and connects them to helpful resources and to each other. In partnership with Verland, JRS has established a Community Living Arrangement (CLA, or group home) for young adults with more complex care needs. A second home will open in the summer of 2020.
