Mission Statement
Our mission is to empower adults and families with literacy skills that enable them to lead successful, fulfilled lives as members of our communities.
About This Cause
The Literacy Council of Southwestern PA (LCSWPA) transforms lives by giving the gift of reading, writing, and language skills to adults and their families, thereby empowering individual economic opportunity, a deeper sense of community, and a higher quality of life. Founded in 1985 the LCSWPA is a volunteer-run, privately funded 501C(3) non-profit that has worked with thousands of adults and their families to improve reading, writing, and English language skills. We have four programs: 1. Adult Basic Education (ABE) - Where we work with low level adult literacy students whose goal is to improve reading skills or acquire a G.E. D.. 2. English as a Second Language (ESL) - Where we offer English classes and tutoring to non-native English speaking students. 3. Children's Literacy (CL) - We realized many students who wished to attend our classes had preschool children in the home that prevented them from attending. We provide child care and enrichment for the children of our students. We also offer a summer program for school aged children so that their parents can continue with English classes over summer vacation. 4. Lastly, is our signature program, the Baby Book Bag (BBB) - The program began in 1994 and since then we have distributed 26,000 Baby Book Bags to new mother's in our community. The bags include a baby board or cloth book, literature stressing the importance of reading to your child from birth, important developmental milestones to look for, and listing of all the libraries in the county.
