Mission Statement

Educating children and youth and strengthening families, in a bilingual, multicultural environment.

About This Cause

Founded in 1986 to provide early childhood education services to 15 children in DC's Columbia Heights neighborhood, CentroNía has spent the last 38 years growing and adapting our programs to meet the evolving needs of the predominantly low-income, immigrant community we serve. Today, we provide affordable, high-quality bilingual early childhood education and comprehensive family support services to over 2,542 children and families throughout the greater DC area. CentroNía embraces a comprehensive approach to early childhood education that recognizes that quality adult-child interaction and instruction, safe and developmentally appropriate learning environments, and nourishing food are all essential components for children’s optimal learning and development, especially during the critical first five years of life when the brain’s network of neural pathways are developed and strengthened. Programs include Early Childhood Education, Food and Wellness, Out of School Time Programs, and the CentroNía Institute. In addition to our work with early learners, CentroNía offers before- and after-school services, evening and weekend enrichment activities, and workforce training for community members interested in going into the childcare field. Above all, CentroNía is committed to the belief that every child should have access to educational opportunities and experiences that enable them to reach their full potential and that investing in comprehensive early childhood services is a powerful and cost-effective way to create an intergenerational cycle of opportunity and realize the vision of a community supported, learning, and thriving together. To bring this belief to life, CentroNía is committed to reinforcing and deepening its bilingual Early Childhood Education program to continue to meet the physical, social, emotional, language, and cognitive needs of each child we serve in order to ultimately increase the number of children meeting or exceeding developmental expectations and school readiness standards.
