Mission Statement

Energy Innovation Center Institute, Inc (www.eicipgh.org) (“EICI”) is a 501(c)3 organization created to help solve the world’s most intractable energy and human capital problems by advancing equitable and carbon free resiliency for humans and energy systems.

About This Cause

A 501C3 designed to advance equitable and carbon free resiliency for humans and energy systems. Our focus includes innovative workforce development programming and fostering commercial advances in zero carbon energy technologies and systems. We collaborate to help implement these systems in disadvantaged communities as a Justice 40 solution for regional companies. Deploying our growing convening authority, since our inception in 2016, we have hosted over 22,000 participants in our energy transition focused conferences, summits, and training programs. Our charter also includes a formal relationship supporting the development of the Energy Innovation Center ecosystem (a 200,000 square foot innovation hub located in Pittsburgh’s Hill District) where we are headquartered. WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT – THE NUMBERS: The EICI’s predominate activities center around innovative workforce development with a focus on the region’s economically distressed minority communities. We connect the stranded talent in these communities to the prosperity and good jobs from which they are often excluded. Established only 6 years ago, the EICI has grown to become one of the region’s largest and most effective post-secondary workforce development training and upskilling organizations. We work directly with regional employers to design and run programs that recruit, vet, train, onboard and support new minority employees at scale. To date 2,703 of our graduates have been employed with the following KPI’s: • 89 % People of Color, 92% below the 2-times U.S. poverty level • 28.6 years - average age of our graduates • 85% graduation rate, 86% employment rate with 74%+ six-month retention rates o Our programs have helped reduce employer partner turnover rates from 57% to 12% • $47.8 million aggregate compensation of our graduates since inception • We deploy effective multimodal pedagogies in our programming including IR/XR training, gaming, instructor lead, computer based training, and mock training – all training is free to students • Under current contracts the EICI recruits, vets, trains, and helps place over 600 people per year with a heavy focus on minorities, veterans, and others with meaningful barriers to workforce entry. Current offerings include training curriculums in seven different 120+/- hour programs: o Energy, Utilities, Healthcare, Banking, Building Facilities Management o All jobs are full-time, full benefits, defined career ladders, and opportunities for over-time o Full compensation ranges from $43,000 to $72,000 per year • The EICI is a certified registered apprenticeship organization under the PA Department of L&I o 174 registered apprentices approved in 2021, 83 to date in 2022 • We have also trained/upskilled over 1,820 people in our incumbent worker training programs • In 2019, we created the Infrastructure Academy, an initiative for the utility, infrastructure, and EV industries to both diversify and upskill its incumbent workers • The EICI has a formal relationship with over 400 regional community partners and many employer partners and collaborators, including the National Safety Council, GoogleX’s, and others INFRASTRUCTURE ACADEMY ™ (“IA” a wholly owned initiative of the EICI). A utility, infrastructure, and electrification focused initiative of the EICI. IA is the structure being developed to expand our successful and rapidly growing programming regionally and then nationally. Using a hub and spoke strategy (with facilities in PA and soon in Ohio and WVA) the IA is providing standardized minority focused recruiting and training for both current employment needs of the utilities and infrastructure industries but also for the new jobs of the clean energy transition with a heavy focus on DER, hydrogen, batteries, long duration energy storage, fuel cell, renewables and CCUS. The IA’s planned Hydrogen Hub demonstration facilities are becoming highly sought after nationally as resources for advance curriculum development, training, and rapid commercialization of new energy technology and systems.
