About This Cause

Spectrum Charter School (SCS) was established in 1999 as the first autism-specific charter school in the United States. SCS is a tuition-free, public charter school accredited by the PA Department of Education. Located in Monroeville, PA and currently serving 40 students ages 13-21, our mission is to provide a life changing environment where students and their families feel safe, comfortable, and achieve their highest potential. We envision every child being educated, with skills identified, to live successful and fulfilling lives. SCS offers a robust academic program that prepares all students for graduation complemented by instruction in independent living skills, school-to-work transition, therapeutic recreation (i.e., yoga, pet therapy), community service, student mentoring, and 5-year post-graduation follow-up. SCS values providing a caring/nurturing, student-centered environment where parents, teachers, and community partner together to empower the successful future of every child. Sustainability is the basis for learning at Spectrum Charter School. We are unique not only because we serve students with autism, but also because the faculty and staff have chosen to embed regenerative sustainability into every aspect of the pedagogy in ways that make sustainability principles central to the school’s culture and overall experience. Teaching sustainability at SCS has been recognized locally, regionally, and nationally. In 2005, the school was awarded a two-year Pennsylvania Department of Special Education Performance Grant; “Transition to Community-based Employment” that was featured on NBC’s Today Show as part of their 10-part autism series. In 2011, SCS’s Board of Trustees approved the motion to move forward with the Green & Healthy Expansion Project – an effort to education SCS students on good land stewardship, being responsible for the environment and promoting the health benefits of green and organic living. In 2014, SCS was awarded the “Moving to the Head of the Class: Recognizing Progress toward Energy Efficiency in Pennsylvania Schools” meeting the requirements for a level Gold Designation by the Southwestern PA Sustainable Small Business Program. In 2015, the SCS student Eco-Action team that plans and coordinates many of the school’s projects was presented with the Eco Schools USA Green Flag Award through the National Wildlife Federation by the Green Building Alliance recognizing schools who achieve certain criteria in educating students to take care of their environment. SCS was one of two schools in Pennsylvania to receive this national award. In 2016, SCS earned High Honor status through the Healthy Schools PA Recognition Program. SCS held Building Energy Star Certification from 2014-2018, was awarded First Place in the Duquesne Light Community Education Energy Efficiency Program and has been designated as a Live Well Allegheny School.
