Mission Statement
PRESERVE, PROMOTE AND PERPETUATE THE FILIPINO HERITAGE THROUGH CULTURAL, CHARITABLE AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES. We do these through the programs we organize at our center in West Mifflin, which include civic engagement, professional development, healthcare outreach, youth programs, and workshops to help with the transition of immigrants into the region. We envision a dynamic and vibrant Filipino American community recognized and valued as an integral part of America's ethnic diversity.
About This Cause
The FAAP was founded in 1957 as a cultural and social group. It was incorporated in 2000 and received its 501-c3 certification. Our dedicated volunteers and leadership team were able to accomplish several notable initiatives such as: - Establishing a physical home in Pittsburgh in 2017 by purchasing a building in West Mifflin that was transformed into the Philippine Center, where Filipinos feel a sense of belonging, a welcoming place for Filipino immigrants in Pittsburgh. - Providing support for new and existing immigrants and increasing awareness of rights and access to government services allowing them to thrive in the communities. - Hosting health & wellness events such as Covid vaccine clinics, free health screenings, and educational workshops on healthcare. - Partnering with the Philippine Consulate General of New York every two years to provide consular services. Providing immigration support and naturalization preparation resources. - Partnering with other ethnic groups in the region to celebrate diversity and inclusion by hosting the annual Multicultural event. The event features music, dance, and live performance arts from various cultural backgrounds. - Hosting food festivals and events to increase cultural awareness and competency within the West Mifflin community and Allegheny County; and - Encouraging civic engagement by advocating for Census 2020 participation, registering Filipinos to vote, translating voter materials, and ensuring state and local government officials in office hear diverse voices. The FAAP major programs are grouped under its three pillars - Charity, Culture and Education. - Under the Education pillar are programs such as the Maramba Scholarships for high school seniors, educational workshops such as professional and personal development, health and wellness workshops, language classes, and history lessons. Within the Education Pillar are our Civic Engagement efforts, such as voter registration drive, text banking, phone banking, canvassing and distribution of voter materials in Tagalog. - Under the Culture pillar is our dance program with our renowned FAAP Dance Troupe, various food festivals, Cafe Filipino, Mural installation, construction of the Filipiniana Room (mini museum), music lessons, and other cultural presentations. - Under the Charity pillar is our program to donate funds during calamities in the Philippines, as well as donations to orphanages, and other social services. Within the Charity pillar is our volunteering efforts around the community, such as the Food Bank, Western PA Conservancy, etc. We also conduct outreach services to the Filipino community such as Covid vaccines, free clinics and health screenings, as well as financial support to our members experiencing hardship.
