Mission Statement
The Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance Creates Equity and Opportunity In, Through, and For the Arts and Humanities in Greater Baltimore.
About This Cause
Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance is a leading nonprofit provider of services to artists and cultural organizations in the region. Whether they are emerging or established, mainstream or underground, grassroots or institutional, GBCA believes in unifying and strengthening all members of the creative community. We do this through marketing, education, financial support, and developing innovative programs that increase equity in the cultural community and beyond. VISION Artists, and arts, cultural and humanities organizations are valued: - as essential contributors to the social fabric and human spirit of Baltimore; - for their contributions to equitable education, economy, and opportunity; - as problem-solving partners to government and business; - and for both their inherent worth and their power to create change. VALUES - Equity, inclusion, access, and justice can be advanced in, and through, arts and culture. - The sector is stronger together and can take collective action. - The dignity of a broad, complex spectrum of human creative expression must be recognized and respected. - The history, evolution, resilience, and aesthetics of Baltimore provide a context for and inform the allocation of GBCA’s resources. CORE PROGRAMS - Baker Artist Portfolios: Created to support artists and promote Greater Baltimore as a strong creative community, the online portfolios are open to artists working in all disciplines. The portfolios expose area artists' work to regional, national and international audiences. - Baker Artist Awards: Artists who create a Baker Artist Portfolio are automatically eligible for one of six annual Baker Artist Awards, which include significant monetary prizes, exhibition opportunities, as well as a feature on Maryland Public Televisions Artworks. - Creative Exchange: The Baltimore Creative Exchange is a new initiative, which was envisioned as part of GBCA’s 2020-2025 Strategic Plan. It will connect businesses seeking to purchase, commission, or lease creative goods and services from artists and makers throughout Baltimore. - Culture Fly: GBCA’s dynamic online calendar, Culture Fly, serves as the region’s premier events listing, connecting its 100,000 unique annual website visitors and thousands of weekly subscribers to the cultural community’s events. - GBCA: This Week: A weekly digital newsletter featuring news, events, opportunities, and a letter from GBCA's Executive Director, Jeannie L. Howe. From critical advocacy announcements to local, national, and international arts and culture news, GBCA: This Week is a vital resource for over 6,000 subscribers. - JobsPlus: The region's most comprehensive cultural jobs board, which connects artists and administrators to opportunities, as well as to auditions, internships and more. - Urban Arts Leadership (UAL): The flagship program of the GBCA’s equity and inclusion efforts, UAL has been operating for nearly a decade. The initiative is a workforce development fellowship awarded to high- achieving emerging leaders of color, and it champions policies and practices of cultural equity that empower a just, inclusive, equitable nation. - UAL Field School: Teaches the practices of folklorists to artists and administrators, to be used as a method for authentic and ethical community engagement. First piloted in 2019 - 2020 through an exciting partnership with The Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institute Folklife Center -- The UAL Field School supports responsible field research that strengthens interpretive exhibitions, programming, and audience-building initiatives. MEMBERSHIP Currently GBCA serves over 120 organization and individual members through a range of benefits, including marketing and audience engagement tools; resources for job seekers; professional development initiatives that advance equity, inclusion, and anti-racism; and new revenue generation tools.
