About This Cause

Edith P. Wright Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. Organization Summary Our History: EPW is a Maryland based, all volunteer 501(c)(3) organization founded by the children of the late Mrs. Edith P. Wright, who courageously fought and succumbed to breast cancer at the age of 39. EPW launched its first musical fundraising effort in 1998 at the Historic T.C. Williams High School located in Alexandria, VA. EPW was officially incorporated in 2007. The Chair of the Foundation is local celebrity Singer, Songwriter, Philanthropist, Miriamm Wright McKinney, who is also known as the former “Peaches” of the successful “Peaches and Herb” duo. Our Reason: The children of Mrs. Edith P. Wright began the Foundation with a firm commitment: keeping their Mother’s legacy alive and strong, while sharing her love of life! About Mrs. Edith P. Wright: Mrs. Edith Purter Wright was a loving and nurturing wife and mother of four beautiful children. "Eydie," as she was affectionately known, was full of life, compassionate, artistic, and had an angelic voice. The Foundation's programs and activities have been shaped to reflect the essence of Eydie's spirit, style and substance. Our Mission: To provide support services to families facing breast cancer. We Accomplish Our Mission by the EPW 3-prong approach: Serve. Educate. Celebrate! • Serve. EPW provides direct support services such as house cleaning and grocery service, to families being treated for with breast cancer. • Educate. EPW provides education awareness to the community, thru self-breast examination demonstrations, guest speakers and information dissemination. • Celebrate! EPW founded the EPW Awards, an annual event celebrating families fighting breast cancer, survivors, caregivers, and companies supporting the fight against breast cancer. EPW’s Current Programs and Events: EPW’s “B&B Program” – EPW provides Breakfast & Baskets on a monthly base in support of our community partner, Howard University Cancer Center (HUCC) in Washington, DC during its monthly “MammoDay.” Continental breakfast is provided for uninsured or under-insured women (and their families) receiving free mammograms. EPW’s volunteer group, Eydie’s Angels (EAs), also make and serves activity baskets for chemo infusion centers to assist patients in keeping a positive mind set while receiving treatments. These baskets include music, snacks, puzzle books, reading material, notes cards and more! EPW’s Eydie’s Angel Service Program – EPW provides direct support such as grocery service, professional house cleaning service and emergency assistance to its clients being treated for breast cancer. EPW’s Eydie’s Angel (EA) Volunteer Program – EPW’s volunteer group has been named after Mrs. Edith P. Wright and carries her legacy of caring and love forward. EAs provide support to families being treated for breast cancer by accompanying them to appointments, assisting with in-home care and support, phone buddies, and errand running. EPW’s “Oh What Fun ~ Toy Run” – Program for children who have lost a parent to breast cancer and are experiencing their first Christmas without their parent. Children have an opportunity to grab toys in a fast-paced exciting adventure! Afterwards, the fellowship continues as the children and their families have breakfast together in a group setting affording families a relaxed environment where families can share experiences and memories of loved ones affected by breast cancer. EPW’s Pink Print Party Bus Tour – EPW’s Pink Print is a program celebrating breast cancer survivors in a day of fun and conversation. It also documents the survivor’s journey to conquering breast cancer through inspiration, motivation and community impact. EPW’s “Straight Up-Taking it to the Top” – Program for teens designed to spark conversation, as well as educate teens on the topic of good breast health habits. Teens are able to discuss in a healthy environment any questions relative to breast health and are equipped with take home tools necessary in assisting in developing and continuing healthy living. Eydie’s Day – A day of service honoring the life of Mrs. Edith P. Wright where EPW’s EAs visit and volunteer in local hospitals and cancer centers. EPW Awards – Annual event honoring survivors, caregivers, medical professionals, and unsung heroes dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. EPW’s “Turning the Green Pink” – Annual Family Miniature Golf Tournament. Funds assist with EPW programs designed to support children impacted by breast cancer.
