Mission Statement
Mission Statement In keeping with the spirit of Jarrett’s original message, the Jarrett’s Joy Cart mission is to positively impact children in various crisis situations, providing for a joyous moment or experience and/or assisting organizations caring for children in crises through various forms of donations. “It’s not really about the toys. It’s about giving the kids something to look forward to and to enjoy.”— Jarrett Mynear
About This Cause
About Jarrett’s Joy Cart As a patient himself, Jarrett Mynear knew long days at doctor visits and stays in the hospital could be boring, scary, and depressing. For this reason, at the tender age of 9, he started Jarrett’s Joy Cart in 1999, a program that offers moments of JOY to children in various types of crisis situations. The motto is, "In JOY, there is a moment of healing." Based in the Lexington, Kentucky area, Jarrett’s Joy Cart, an all-volunteer non-profit organization, is directed by Jarrett’s Parents, Jennifer and Doug Mynear, and a host of dedicated helpers. Since Jarrett started his Joy Cart in 1999, Jarrett’s Joy Cart has touched the lives of tens of thousands of children from all across Kentucky and beyond. He created his Joy Cart during year 7 of his battle with Ewings Sarcoma. He went on to receive several prestigious national awards, appeared on local and national television, sharing about his efforts for others amidst his cancer battle. A book, " The Boy Who Delivered Joy", written by Marvin Bartlett, was written to share Jarrett's story and encourage others to look beyond their challenges and help others. Jarrett lost his cancer battle in 2002, knowing that his family and friends would continue his legacy. We have a wide range of programs and outreach efforts to bring smiles, laughter, and learning to children who have been faced with challenges that no child should have to face. We particularly concentrate on children from across Kentucky being treated at KY Children’s Hospital in Lexington. Many of the children we serve have chronic childhood diseases such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, asthma, kidney and heart issues, just to name a few. Thanks to support from wonderful donors, we have expanded our services to include: Weekly visits to Kentucky Children’s Hospital and a new toy or gift for each of approximately 60 patients, ages 0-18, both inpatient and outpatient Treasure box items for patients served at Kentucky Children’s Hospital Outpatient Specialty Clinics Arts/Crafts, games, toys, books, and more for use during long clinic stays for outpatient appointments at the Pediatric Outpatient Specialty Clinics Instituted the Health, Education, and Empowerment through Play (HEEP) program through support of the Children’s Charity Fund of the Bluegrass. HEEP provides books, DVDs, and educational play items for patients with chronic and life-threatening illnesses to learn about their disease. He was interested in those things enjoyed by kids his age – playing with friends, video games, swimming and going on vacation. The thing that made Jarrett a little different from most kids was that he was diagnosed with cancer six times from two years old until he succumbed to the disease at age 13. As a result of his treatment and rehabilitation, Jarrett spent a lot of time in hospitals receiving chemotherapy, two bone marrow transplants and the amputation of his lower right leg. His treatments were administered at various medical institutions including the Mayo Clinic, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the Kentucky Children’s Hospital and the National Institutes of Health. When first diagnosed, a family friend told Doug and Jennifer to “look for the good in this bad situation.” Though that statement may seem a little odd, Doug and Jennifer discovered a number of special friends that the family met from across the country. It was because of these friends and Jarrett’s compassion for others that Jarrett decided to start Jarrett’s Joy Cart. As a patient himself, Jarrett knew that being in the hospital is scary and lonely. He also realized the importance of knowing that someone else was thinking about you as well. Jarrett’s goal in starting the Joy Cart was to bring excitement and joy into every child’s hospital stay. Jarrett’s philosophy was that in moments of joy, there is healing. This rings true in the various outreach efforts Jarrett’s Joy Cart now provides. Jarrett often spoke of the importance of looking out for others and bringing a bit of joy to those most in need. ©2015 Jarrett's Joy Cart | P.O.
