Mission Statement
The mission of Playhouse arts is to use the arts, as a tool to build a community that is inspired and empowered to work together for the common good. Playhouse Arts, through the Arcata Playhouse, annually presents a bounty of diverse programs from national and international touring acts to local performing artists, offering workshops, informative lectures, presentations, placing local artists in schools, mentoring teens, installing street art and painting as well as providing low cost entertainment to our rural community. The Board and Staff of Playhouse Arts believe the arts are an essential part of a healthy community.
About This Cause
Playhouse Arts: What we do and who were are: Since 2006 the Arcata Playhouse and Playhouse Arts have established themselves as vital contributors to the cultural livelihood of Arcata and Humboldt County. By presenting exciting high quality music and theater in an intimate setting for young and old alike, the Playhouse has garnered a stellar reputation as one of community’s finest cultural gems. Located in the historic old creamery building at 9th and L Street in Arcata, the Playhouse has flexible seating for 140 and is fully equipped with lighting, sound and projection systems. Known for its outstanding acoustics, warm atmosphere and fresh baked cookies, this unique performing arts center is truly an asset to our community. We offer the following: Facility: Arcata Playhouse: an intimate 140 seat theater in the Creamery District. The theatre is rented by local musicians, theater artists, and performers, for school performances (Coastal Grove and Northcoast Preparatory), by nonprofits for fundraisers, films and lectures(Northcoast Environmental Center, CASA, Humboldt Garden Collective) and by touring artists. The rent is reasonable and accessible and the facility is available to the community at large. Playhouse Arts Annex: Lush Newton and James Hildebrandt share this studio space as our visual artists in residence, taking part in our outdoor spectacles, in-house productions, marketing designs, Playhouse Artists in Schools and the development of the Creamery District. The rent is subsidized by Playhouse Arts, and the relationship between the Arts Annex and the theater is mutually beneficial. Programs: 1. Excite and Ignite: The goal of the program is to empower youth to produce, promote and play in the arts to build better community engagement and communication. Apprentice Entertainment: A youth program that engages students in 9th through 12th grade to build community through the arts. At the center of Apprentice is a “teen task force” comprised of local teens. This youth task force, named Apprentice Entertainment, meets weekly at the Arcata Playhouse to plan activities for youth in the region. We currently have 12 members on the task force with participants from Arcata High, McKinleyville High, Northcoast Preparatory Academy. They are mentored in how to produce events, from marketing and budgets to lights sound and performance. They learn to work together as a team. They also engage in arts related fields trips such as local performances and Arts Alive!. Playhouse Artists in Schools: This program, led by our education Director, Amy Tetzlaff works in partnership with the Humboldt County Office of Education. The goal is to provide teaching artists to local schools at a discounted rate. We currently provide 24 weeks of onsite, in school instruction at five local schools. Playhouse Workshop Series: We offer several workshop opportunities coinciding with school breaks and in the summer months in clowning, mask, stilt walking, pageantry, improvisation, sound production, lights, cupcake decorating, costume construction. We also offer free lantern building workshops (in Fortuna, Eureka, Arcata, Blue Lake and McKinleyville), in conjunction with our free outdoor spectacle Elemental. We are working with the parks and recreation departments in the Cities of Fortuna, Eureka, Arcata, Blue Lake and McKinleyville. To date, Elemental has been performed in Arcata, Blue Lake, Eureka, Laytonville, Calgary, Alberta and Pender Island British Columbia. Playhouse Family Fun Series: This series is aimed at youth of all ages and their families. The ticket prices are kept low, in order for local families to attend. We offer tickets to local childrens services agencies, and to families via local business sponors. The series includes professional performances, interactive workshops. Performance take place from January to May and include three performance weekends, school performances, as well as an onsite workshop. Workshops usually take place at a school that is participating in the Playhouse Artist in Schools program, and local schools receive bus subsidies to attend. Business sponsorships are linked to schools in their district in order for smaller rural schools to attend. The opening night includes a reception for artists and the audience to mingle. . 2. Playhouse Arts Presents: Playhouse Arts supports local and touring artists by presenting them at the Arcata Playhouse. The Arcata Playhouse is fast becoming a stopping point between Portland and San Francisco and a favorite amongst touring performers because of its acoustics, responsive audience and general “feel”. Music Series: Annually Playhouse Arts presents over 60 music performances as sole producer and in conjunction with other local producers. We present local musicians as well as national and international touring artists. Theatre Series: Playhouse Arts also presents local and touring theater artists, such as Loon from Portland, Pi Clowns from San Francisco, Patrick Ball from Sebastapol among others. Outdoor Events: Playhouse Arts produced The Solar Eclipse Festival,The Creamery Fest- a community arts event in August of 2013. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FZLKC52xGQ We have an interest in producing fantastic family friendly events in the Creamery District. 3. Playhouse Arts Resident Company-Four on the Floor Theater: Playhouse Arts supports Four on the Floor Theater, as it’s resident company. Four on the Floor creates original work which includes Women of the Northwest, The Word, Professor Wilikers Puppet Slam, Speakeasy, The Misunderstood Badger, Elemental, Crawdaddy’s Odditorium and The Logger Project among others. The ensemble of Four on the Floor Theater includes Jacqueline Dandeneau, David Ferney, Lush Newton, James Hildebrandt and Malia Penhall with guest artists too many to mention. 4. Creamery District: Playhouse Arts is spearheading the development of their neighborhood, The Creamery District as a center for arts and commerce in cooperation with local businesses, artists, municipal and county governments. They have driven the agenda for the development for the last year and half, with $100,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Headwaters Fund, the Humboldt Area Foundation and the James Irvine Foundation. The momentum surrounding this development is continually growing, with local business owners, community members, artists, and non-profits getting involved on many levels. The goal is for the Creamery District to be managed by an entity separate from Playhouse Arts, but that we would be one of a group of decision makers. The format and structure of this entity has yet to be decided, but the process is in motion and we hope to have it established by April of 2014. The Creamery Fest- a community arts event will take place on August 23-25, 2013 and will highlight local artists and artisans, as well as include outstanding acts from out of the area. We will set up art installations within the District with lanterns made in outlying cities. The goal of the Creamery Fest is to launch some ideas that were generated in the community charettes, provide a venue for artists to prosper both financially and artistically, and to give the community an opportunity to give their input on the possibilities of the District. 5. Granting: Playhouse Arts most recently granted five local artists $7,200 to install public art in the Creamery District. An art committee was formed, made up of Libby Maynard, Mary Lou Bertollini, Holly Hosterman, Melissa Finnigan and Jacqueline Dandeneau, to choose the artists. This initial granting committee was inspired to stay together to vet further art installations in the District and working in conjunction with other committees.
